With more than 40 years of accrued experience, Dr. Protess flourished as a professor of journalism and a faculty fellow with the Institute for Policy Research at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, from 1982 until 2011. He left Northwestern to establish The Chicago Innocence Project and served as its president until his retirement in 2016. Previously, he was associated with Chicago Lawyer Magazine as a contributing editor and staff writer between 1984 and 1989. Beginning his career as an assistant professor of political science at Loyola University in Chicago in 1974, he further progressed to the director of research for the Better Government Association from 1976 to 1981. Additionally, Dr. Protess has worked as the director of investigations for the Center for Wrongful Convictions of Youth at the Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law's Bluhm Legal Clinic.
An active figure in Chicago, Dr. Protess has been engaged in a number of other professional endeavors. A member of the advisory board for The Chicago Reporter, he also contributed as a consultant for WMAQ-TV since 1982, and served as director of The Medill Innocence Project from 1999 to 2011. A respected voice in the industry, he co-wrote three books: "Gone in the Night," in 1993 "The Journalism of Outrage," in 1991, and "A Promise of Justice," in 1998. Dr. Protess also co-authored an anthology, "Setting the Agenda," in 1991.
As a testament to his prolific career, Dr. Protess has been the recipient of numerous accolades and honors. He was named the McCormick Endowed Chair for Teaching Excellence at Northwestern University, and was presented with a Human Rights Award from the National Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression, the Best Investigative Reporting Award from the Illinois Associated Press, and was named the "Person of the Week" by ABC News. To remain current with industry trends, he maintains a professional relationship with the Investigative Reporters and Editors and Society of Professional Journalists.
Dr. Protess pursued a formal education at Roosevelt University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1968. A short time later, he attended the University of Chicago, where he secured a Master of Arts in 1970 and a PhD in 1974. He has been married to his wife Joan Perry since 1980. The couple share two sons, Daniel and Benjamin.
