With more than 55 years of experience in medicine, Dr. Cohen is a diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine and the subspecialty of Medical Oncology and is currently an associate clinical professor of medicine and oncologic sciences at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Dr. Cohen began his career by completing a Bachelor of Arts at Brooklyn College in New York in 1957, before attending the University of Pittsburgh, where he would earn his Doctor of Medicine in 1962.
From 1962 to 1963, Dr. Cohen completed an internship at Montefiore Medical Center in New York City, continuing to serve as an assistant resident from 1963 to 1964. Completing an additional residency at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City in 1964, he was a fellow in hematology with the American Cancer Society from 1965 to 1966. Following these accomplishments, he served as a captain in the United States Air Force Medical Service from 1966 to 1968. On his return to civilian life, he was a fellow in hematology and oncology at Long Island Jewish Hospital from 1968 to 1969.
Dr. Cohen has been extensively published in professional journals, and served as associate editor of Cancer Investigation from 1993 to 2002. He is a past president of the New York Cancer Society and the founding president of the New York State Society of Medical Oncologist and Hematologists. His research focuses on malignant melanoma. Dr. Cohen has lent his expertise to a number of medically-minded community organizations, including having served on the board of directors of the Community Oncology Alliance from 2004 to 2008 and the Lung Cancer Alliance from 2001 to 2004, and as the chair of the national advisory council of the Chemotherapy Foundation from 1982 to 1995. Additionally, he served on the Board of Governors of the State of Israel Bonds from 1979 to 1992, and as president of the Jewish American Political Action Committee from 1981 to 1983.
