With 60 years of professional experience, Dr. Seppi has been retired since 2012, having been a principal scientist with the Varian Ginston Research Center since 1993. Prior to obtaining this role, he held a number of positions with Varian Associates Inc., including senior scientist from 1987 to 1992, technical director from 1985 to 1986, manager of computer tomography from 1977 to 1978, engineering manager of radiation from 1983 to 1985, and manager of medical diagnostic instrumentation from 1974 to 1982. His career at Varian included major improvements in medical imaging. Two areas of note are his work on Computerized Tomography and Digital Radiography. There are many "firsts" in his career. For example, at a time when CT head scan took several minutes per scan, he used a scanner he developed, to perform the world's first 3 sec CT scans of clinical patients. Lung, liver, head, heart, prostate, gated dynamic heart scans were taken. One of the heart scans was performed on an early Stanford heart transform.patient Previous to his work at Varian Dr Seppi worked at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory from 1968 to 1974, in this part of his career, he was "Physics Head" for the construction of the Bean Switchyard, a ten million dollar facility for processing and delivering the high-power; high-energy electron beam from the end of the two mile accelerator to experimenters in several locations in the research area. Another "first", Dr Seppi operated the control station to deliver the first beam through the Switchyard. In the latter part of his SLAC career Dr seppi was Head of a department operating the Beam Switch Yard and providing major support to Experimenters. He also partnered with experimental groups doing high energy physics at SLAC. Earlier in his career, Dr. Seppi was a staff physicist with the Institute for Defense Analyses from 1962 to 1964 and with General Electric at Hanford Atomic Works from 1952 to 1958. At IDA he performed some studies of high-power lasers. And at the Hanford Atomic Works was the first to measure some fission cross sections and nuclear physics fission properties used in reactor design.
Prior to embarking on his career, Dr. Seppi began his studies at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in 1952. He went on to continue his studies with a Master of Science from the University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho, in 1956. Joining the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, Dr. Seppi completed a research fellowship and earned a Doctor of Philosophy in 1962.
A respected voice in his areas of interest, Dr. Seppi has been an active leader in his community. A former consultant for the Institute of Defense Analyses and the Superconducting Super Collider, he holds more than 70 patents and has contributed to more than 50 scientific publications. He is a member of the American Physical Society, and he has served on the board of directors of the Ladera Community Association and as an assistant scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America.
Throughout his career, Dr. Seppi has been recognized for his contributions. Notably, he has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in the West. Accomplishing much throughout the years, Dr. Seppi is most proud of his contributions to digital and CT scanning, which include developing and producing the world's first whole body three second CT scanner and the development of a CT scanner using mega-volt radiation.
