With more than 30 years of professional experience to her credit, Ms. Smith-Ansotegui retired as a teacher for the Churchill County School District in 2007. Prior to this engagement, she served as a sixth grade teacher for E.C. Best Elementary School in Fallon, Numa Elementary School in Fallon, and Lahontan Elementary School, between 1988 and 2007. At the start of her career, Ms. Smith-Ansotegui taught first graders at Northside Elementary School in Fallon from 1973 to 1977, before becoming a home school teacher with Calvert School in Kauai, Hawaii, until 1980.
Soon thereafter, Ms. Smith-Ansotegui returned to Northside Elementary School as a first grade teacher for a year, further accepting the position of a reading and history teacher at Minnie P. Blair Middle School in Fallon, between 1981 and 1988. The highlight of Ms. Smith-Ansotegui's career was teaching her students and seeing them grow, especially in a small town like Fallon. Watching them matriculate from grade to grade and maturing made her very proud.
Alongside her primary endeavors, Ms. Smith-Ansotegui contributed to the Nevada Department of Education as a teacher and trainer in mathematics since 1990. She also served as a coordinator for mathematics workshops in the Churchill County School District for four years. For her accomplishments in the field, she has been the recipient of the State and National Presidential Award for Excellence in mathematics and science teaching in 1997. Additionally, Ms. Smith-Ansotegui was recognized as the "County Teacher of the Year," by Churchill County in 1994.
A graduate of the University of Nevada, Ms. Smith-Ansotegui earned a Bachelor of Science in elementary education in 1973. She went on to receive a Master of Education in curriculum and instruction from Lesley University in 1996. Furthermore, she concluded her academic pursuits with a Master of Education in administration and supervision from the University of Phoenix in 2001. To remain knowledgeable about changes in the field, Ms. Smith-Ansotegui maintains affiliation with the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the Churchill County Education Association, the Nevada Mathematics Council, and the American Association of University Women.
