David M. Band has devoted the majority of his life and talents to art as a painter, printmaker, educator, conservator, framer, art dealer and collector. His love and passion for art has been a force in his life for as long as he can remember. Even though Mr. Band considers himself primarily self-taught, he attended a high school where he was one of a few students who were selected for an advanced art training program with courses normally found in universities or formal art institutions. Upon graduation he received a scholarship to the summer art program at the University of Maine. After completing the program he enlisted in the Unites States Air Force where his education and art career continued. His formal military training and education was in the mental health and behavioral sciences career field, which he feels has been of immeasurable value to the present day. While on active duty, Mr. Band participated regularly in local and command level art competi¬tions and exhibitions. When his abilities were recognized, he requested and received an assignment to the School of Health Care Sciences, Sheppard AFB, Wichita Falls, TX. to train as a medical illustrator. In addition to his primary responsibilities as a medical illustrator, he was given the opportunity to travel, observe and document medical field operations training exercises with photography, drawings and paintings.
Most notably, one of Mr. Band's assignments was to create a series of paintings depicting medical personnel training and working under combat conditions. This collection of paintings are currently in the National Archives at The Smithsonian Institution. Mr. Band's military career began in January 1967 at Sheppard AFB, Wichita Falls, TX and was completed in June 1987, with his retirement from active duty at the same base with 20 years of service. During this period of time he was in the unique position to serve and develop his art career simultaneously. He was represented by galleries in Dallas and Galveston, but, not until his association with The Baker Gallery of Fine Art, in Lubbock, TX., did everything begin to develop.
A few years before retiring, he was having a casual conversation with the gallery director when the topic turned from collecting to his work, and he was invited to send some slides of his work. Shortly after receiving them, he was asked to become a gallery artist. The Baker Gallery represented some of the finest artists in the country, including many from the National Academy of Design. Being able to exhibit with and get to know some of these artists provided the focus, discipline and guidance necessary to progress to the next level of his art career.
Notable among his solo exhibitions, Mr. Band was honored with a retrospective exhibition at The Wichita Falls Museum of Art, Wichita Fall, TX, in 1995. He has been an active participant in both group and juried exhibitions throughout the country for many years including National Invitationals in New York, Ohio, California and Missouri. Mr. Band's work is represented in many private and public collections including The Butler Institute of America Art, Youngstown, OH, Museum of Texas Tech University, Lubbock, TX, Springfield Art Museum, Springfield, MO, The United States Air Force Permanent Collection, Washington, DC, Davis Museum and Cultural Center, Wellesley College, Wellesley, MA and Salmagundi Club, New York, NY.
Mr. Band is the author of Enrich Your Paintings with Texture, North Light Publications, as well as an active contributor for books in his areas of expertise. He has authored numerous articles published in professional journals and magazines in addition to being featured for his work and dedication in a 2001 edition of International Artists Magazine in which he was cited among the "Master Painters of the World, United States Showcase."
Mr, band has been a juror since 2002, assisting numerous organizations including Allied Artists of America Inc., The Lubbock Arts Alliance, Lubbock, TX., The Longview Museum of Fine Art, Longview, TX., The Red River Valley Museum of Art, Vernon, TX., The Kemp Center for the Arts, Wichita Falls, TX., and various additional venues as well.
Mr. Band is an elected member of Allied Artists of America Inc. and Audubon Artists Inc. He is a signature member of The National Watercolor Society, The watercolor USA Honor Society and is a member of The Salmagundi Club and The Artists Fellowship as well.
He has conducted workshops and art classes at The Wichita Falls Museum of Art in addition to providing art therapy sessions for children with learning disabilities.
In light of his life-long commitment to art and art education, he has received numerous awards over the years with a few of the most significant being The Dale Myers Cooper Medal for watercolor, 86th Annual Exhibition, Allied Artists of America in 1999, The Adolph and Clara Obrig Prize for watercolor by an American Artists, 175th Annual Exhibition, National Academy of Design in 2000, The John Young Hunter memorial Award, 90th Annual Exhibition, Allied Artists of America in 2003, The William A. Paton Prize for watercolor, 179th Annual Exhibition of Contemporary Art, national Academy of Design in 2004, The Audubon Artists Gold Medal of Honor, 63rd Annual Exhibition, Salmagundi Club in 2005; The Ogden Pleissner Memorial Award, Annual Combined Members Exhibition, Salmagundi Club in 2007, The Samuel O. King Award, Watercolor USA, Springfield Art Museum, Springfield, MO in 2009, The Grumbacher Gold Medallion, national Arts Club 111th Annual Members Exhibition, New York, NY in 2010; The Loring W. Coleman Award for watercolor Allied Artists of America, Inc. Annual Exhibition in 2011, and the Rita Duis Memorial Award, 135th Annual Members Exhibition, Salmagundi Club in 2019.
In addition, Mr. Band has been selected for inclusion in the 56th and 57th editions of Who's Who in America, the 23rd and 33rd editions of Who's Who in American Art, the 7th and 8th editions of Who's Who in American Education, and is also listed in the Biographical Encyclopedia of American Painters, Sculptors and Engravers of the United States.
