RHINEBECK, NY, August 15, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Lawrence Kramer, PhD with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Kramer celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Dr. Kramer is a composer and musicologist with more than 45 years of distinction in the field. Educated at the University of Pennsylvania (BA 1968) and Yale University (Ph. D 1972), he began his academic career as Assistant Professor of English at the University of Pennsylvania before moving to Fordham University in 1978, where he currently holds the position of Distinguished Professor. While still a student, Dr. Kramer co-produced two classical music programs for public radio and considered pursuing a career in composition. But he was unhappy with the strongly factional atmosphere that pervaded university music departments at the time, and chose to take his Ph. D in literature instead. His eventual career path, however, turned out to fuse his literary and musical interests indissolubly.
Dr. Kramer is the author of fourteen books and some hundred and fifty articles on music and culture, ranging widely over the classical repertoire from the eighteenth century to the present. His books include "Why Classical Music Still Matters"; the trilogy "Interpreting Music" (2010), "Expression and Truth" (2102) and "The Thought of Music" (2016, winner of the ASCAP Foundation Virgil Thomson Award for Outstanding Music Criticism"); and "The Hum of the World: A Philosophy of Listening" (2019). His 1990 book "Music as Cultural Practice" is widely credited as having helped to shift the focus of his discipline, and he considers his work in effecting this paradigm shift to be a career highlight. Dr. Kramer's music, composed mainly since 2007, has won competitions and awards and has been performed throughout the United States and Europe. He has composed many pieces for strings, chamber ensemble, and piano, including seven string quartets, a string sextet and string trio, two piano quartets, and sixteen song cycles along with numerous stand-alone songs for voice and piano. His song texts have come predominantly from American poetry, which connects to the literary side of his academic career: Dr. Kramer has produced annotated critical editions of two American classics, Hart Crane's "The Bridge" and the original version of Walt Whitman's Civil War volume "Drum-Taps"—some poems from which he has also set to music.
In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Lawrence Kramer, PhD has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
