He also excels as Medical Director with American Renal Associates Dialysis Centers (West and East) since 2018 and assistant professor of medicine at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine. Previously, he held the position of medical director at DaVita Mission Hills Dialysis Center from 2003 to 2018 and West Texas Dialysis from 1995 to 2002, Total Renal Care from 1995 to 2003, the BMA Dialysis Center from 1987 to 1995, and the El Paso, Texas Dialysis Center from 1985 to 1987. Dr. Pazmiño's career began in Quito, Ecuador, where he graduated with top honors from Instituto Nacional Mejía and later he became an assistant professor of Pharmacology at the Central University of Ecuador School of Medicine from 1971 until 1974. Subsequently, after his postgraduate training in the US, he accepted the posts of staff nephrologist at the National Naval Medical Center from 1979 to 1984, assistant professor of medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences from 1980 to 1983, and then head of the nephrology division at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.
Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Pazmiño studied at Gonzaga University in Washington State and graduated magna cum laude, with a Bachelor of Science in Biology in 1968. Afterwards, he earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Pathology, with high honors in 1971, from the University of Illinois at The Medical Center, Chicago. He then concluded his medical studies at the Central University of Ecuador, obtaining a Doctor of Medicine and Surgery, with top honors, in 1974. He then completed a residency in Internal Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital Medical Center and Fellowships in Nephrology at the University of Cincinnati Hospitals and at the Mayo Clinic. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Nephrology. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP) and of the American Society of Nephrology (FASN). He is also a Fellow of the Interamerican College of Physicians and Surgeons and of the Ecuadorian Academy Of Medicine.
A leader in the field, Dr. Pazmiño was appointed as the main coordinator and a designer by the El Paso Medical Society for the passage of Proposition 12, an amendment that reformed medical malpractice laws in Texas in 2003.
Additionally he is the Founding President of the Southwest Renal Society in 1992 and served as President of Southwest Association of Hispanic American Physicians (SWAHAP) in 1993, President of the American Heart Association (AHA) of El Paso in 1996 and as President of the El Paso County Medical Society in 2013. He received special awards for his services as President from the last three organizations. Additionally, he also contributed as a delegate to the Texas Medical Association and as TMAIT board member from 2003 until 2014. Dr. Pazmiño served in the United States Navy from 1979 to 1984 continuing his service as chief nephrologist until his honorable discharge.
