A certified teacher and library media specialist, Ms. Dennis began her career as a third grade teacher at Ray Street Elementary School in High Point, North Carolina, during 1955. After a year, she became a kindergarten teacher at the Clark Air Base in the Philippines, between 1957 and 1958. Soon thereafter, she accepted the position of special reading teacher and first grade teacher at the Leo P. McDonald Elementary School on the K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base in Michigan from 1961 to 1963. As the spouse of an Army officer, Ms. Dennis continued teaching elementary students on several Air Force bases including the Richard-Gebaur Air Force Base and the Goose Bay Air Force Base between 1963 and 1967.
Furthermore, Ms. Dennis continued teaching first, second, third and fourth grade students at Edgewood Academy in Alabama, the Trinity Christian Day School in Alabama and Fairview Elementary in Olathe, Kansas, from 1967 to 1977. She was later hired by Washington Elementary School in Olathe in 1977, and served the role of a library media specialist for 22 years. Moreover, Ms. Dennis concluded her 55-year career as an instructor of continuing education at the Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kansas, between 1999 and 2010.
Prior to embarking on her professional path, Ms. Dennis pursued a formal education at George Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville, Tennessee, and earned a Bachelor of Science in 1955. She later completed postgraduate coursework at Auburn University in Alabama, between 1972 and 1973, before graduating from the University of Missouri with a Master of Arts in 1977. Ms. Dennis completed further postgraduate coursework at the University of Kansas and the University of Missouri between 1982 and 1996.
An active member of her community, Ms. Dennis has devoted her time with the Pastoral Care and Counseling Committee of the Village Presbyterian Church since 2004. With the aforementioned organization, she has contributed to the adult choir, the library committee and the congregation. In the past, Ms. Dennis has volunteered with the Kansas State Reading Circle Commission in Topeka, the Leawood Baptist Church in Leawood, Kansas, and the Rock Spring Church in Wetumpka, Alabama. For her achievements in the field, she was nominated for the Kansas Master Teacher Award, between 1985 and 1988, and was also a recipient of the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award from the George Peabody College for Teachers.
