Prior to joining the Institute, Dr. Chien garnered valuable expertise as a postdoctoral researcher in the department of molecular biosciences and bioengineering at the University of Hawaii.
A proven leader in the industry, Dr. Chien has contributed much of his time and resources as a researcher, a manager, and an administrator in various departments within the ITRI, including the Eco-System Technology Department and the Green Energy and Eco-System Center. He also provided his expertise as an assistant professor with the department of green energy at National Tainan University and the department of applied chemistry at National Chiayi University. Dr. Chien has continued to serve as an assistant professor in the department of marine environmental engineering at National Kaohsiung Marine University since 2003, and has lectured at the Environmental Professionals Training Institute since 2008.
Dr. Chien boasts responsibility for several achievements in his field, including the development of a biochar composite material and pest prevention agent for use process and formula that enhance yield for organic, friendly farming, and sustainable agriculture. He is the author of three books, "Eco-Healthy Management Technology," "Biochar Modification Technology" and "Biological Micro-Entrapped Technology." Moreover, Dr. Chien is currently a reviewer for the Journal of Hazardous, Toxic, and Radioactive Waste, as well as Desalination, and Water Treatment, a journal dedicated to the research and application of desalination technology, the environment, energy considerations, integrated water management, water reuse, wastewater, and related topics.
An alumnus of the National Sun Yat-Sen University in Taiwan, Dr. Chien holds a doctorate degree. He is certified in numerous areas, particularly in soil and water analysis, wastewater treatment operation, environmental microorganism analysis, and the investigation of natural resources. A member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the International Water Association, and the International Eco-Material Association, Dr. Chien is also an affiliate member of the Taiwan Association of Soil and Groundwater Environmental Protection.
In light of his numerous accomplishments in the field, Dr. Chien has been the recipient of numerous accolades. In particular, he was presented with the Paper Award from the Chinese Journal of Soil and Fertilizer in 2003.
