Notably, he has excelled as the vice president of development for Western Exploration, Inc. and Capital Gold, Inc. as well as the president and the chief executive officer of Lake Victoria Mining Company. Dr. Newell also served in various capacities for the Gold Fields Mining Company, Newmont Exploration Ltd. and Kennecott Exploration Ltd.
Acquiring and developing the El Chanate Gold Mine in Sonora, Mexico, Dr. Newell also found success with Newmont Exploration. Furthermore, he consults on the development of a gold project in southeastern Arizona known as "Mexican Hat." Located 72 miles from Tucson, "Mexican Hat" claims and exploration licenses cover approximately 4,800 acres and is a most promising gold development in the southwestern United States.
Dr. Newell is a past alumni president of the Colorado School of Mines. An elected fellow and the former foundation president of the Society of Economic Geologists, he is also a Fellow of the Geological Society of America. Likewise, Dr. Newell is a 50-year-plus member of the American Institute of Mining and Exploration (AIME), the Society of Mining Engineers and past member of Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Honor Society. He is a member of the Union League Club, New York, NY.
Dr. Newell initially earned a bachelor's degree in geology from the University of Oregon in 1965. He subsequently completed service in the Malaysia Peace Corps between 1965 and 1968 before graduating with a master's degree at the Colorado School of Mines in 1971 and a Doctor of Philosophy at Stanford University in 1975. A retired qualified geologist through the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America, he accepted a Henry DeWitt Smith scholarship at Stanford University in 1972. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Newell has been featured in the 24th edition of Who's Who in the West.
