Having accumulated almost 50 years of experience, Mr. Rand is currently a freelance writer and editor in Belmont. Reflecting his eminent 20-year teaching career at Boston University, he was honored after his retirement in 2018 with the title of Master Lecturer Emeritus. Previously, he served as the executive director for Ballets Russes 2009, a Boston festival. Likewise, he found success at Harvard University as a preceptor from 1997 to 1999. Prior to this appointment, he gained valuable experience as an instructor at Columbia University from 1976 to 1991. His editorial career began at Antaeus for which he served as advisory fiction editor from 1970 to 1973. After, Mr. Rand was an editor for the Washington Monthly from 1974 to 1975.
Prior to embarking upon his professional journey, Mr. Rand pursued an education at University of California Berkeley before leaving for Africa and covering a colonial revolution, which served as the background for his first novel. When the work was received with literary acclaim, he knew he would continue along the path of writing. Mr. Rand graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a Master of Arts in 1975. He was bestowed with a grant in 1977 by the Creative Artists Performing Service of New York.
A member of PEN and an affiliate of the J.K Fairbank Center for East Asian Research, Mr. Rand has published articles and reviews in a number of publications. Books he has authored include "Firestorm," "China Hands: The Adventures and Ordeals of the American Journalists Who Covered the Great Chinese Revolution," "Conspiracy of One," "Gold from Heaven," and "My Zanzibar Revolution," His editorial translation titles include "Deng Xiaoping, Chronicle of an Empire" by Ruan Ming, "Zhou Enlai: The Perfect Revolutionary" and "The Ballets Russes and the Art of Design," among other publications. Additionally, he served as Secretary for the Tavern Club of Boston from 2004 to 2008, President of the Ballets Russes Arts Initiative between 2010 and 2018, and is currently a Trustee of The Museum of Russian Icons.
