FULLERTON, CA, August 26, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Dietrich G. Buss, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Buss celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been recognized for achievements, leadership qualities, and notable successes in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
With 40 years of teaching and publications to his credit, Dr. Buss is an authority on United States history, historiography and geography. He has been recognized as Professor emeritus of history and geography at Biola University for 39 years. There he served as professor and chairman of the History Department for 25 years. He also served as administrative chair of undergraduate social sciences. His entry into teaching was at Culter Academy in Los Angeles where he taught junior high and high school history and U.S. government classes, 1965-66.
Prior to becoming a university educator, Dr. Buss pursued higher education at Biola College where he was graduated with a BA in Education in 1963. He received an MA in Social Science from California State University at Los Angeles in 1966. As he began his teaching career at Biola College, Buss commenced graduate studies at Claremont Graduate University. Professor John NIven mentored him in historiography and historical method. Buss was awarded the PhD in History in 1976.
Dr. Buss was born in Tokyo, Japan to German Liebenzell missionary parents. The family immigrated to the United States in 1951, and to Canada the following year. Upon his reentry to the Unites States in 1957, Buss was graduated from Wheaton Community High School in Wheaton, Illinois in 1958. He then moved to California for his college space education. Dr. Buss married his wife Miriam Eleanore Epp in 1966 and is the father of three children: Eric, Julie and Natalie. He is also the proud grandfather of four grandchildren: Hanna, Bridgette, Colby and Mckennah.
Dr. Buss holds membership in Phi Alpha Theta, the International History Honors Society. He regularly chaired sessions at Phi Alpha Theta southern California regional student conferences. Dr. Buss is the recipient of the Economic and Business History's Charles J. Kennedy Award, 1978, for best research paper presented at the annual conference. In 1980 and 1983 he received grants in history from the National Endowment for the Humanities to attend Summer Seminars with other scholars at Vanderbilt University and the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He received a U.S. Department of Education grant in 1982 to attend a Summer Session of educators engaged in geographic education. This took place at the University of Missouri. He was featured in the 23rd and 24th editions of Who's Who in the West. Dr. Buss was chosen by the International Association of Missionary Aviation (IAMA) in 2009 to serve as the on-site mission aviation historian for AirVenture held annually at Oshkosh, Wisconsin. This was a singular honor and predicated on publication of Giving Wings to the Gospel (Baker 1995).
While living in La Mirada, California, Dr. Buss served on the city's Historical Heritage Commission, and chaired it to realize the restoration of Andrew McNally's Windermere Ranch Historic District. The District is protected under the Federal Register of Historic Places. The centerpiece of the District is Neff House. Its redwood supporting beams and floors are intact from the time of its original construction. A unique feature of the house is its Mediterranean tile roof. During his tenure on the Commission, Dr. Buss led in the founding and incorporation of "Friends of McNally Ranch". The organization gives visibility to the site, and rallies community support; it also sponsors tours of Neff House.
Professor Buss is an advisor to Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) as institutional historian. The organization now located in Nampa, Idaho is producing a 75th anniversary documentary. MAF has been serving people and organizations in the remotest regions of the globe since WWII. Betty Greene, a Women Airforce Service Pilot (WASP), is an MAF founder. She became its first pilot in Mexico and Peru. Betty will be a central figure in the documentary. Dr. Buss brought Green's story, Flying High, to publication; now he is looking forward to seeing the MAF story come to the public on big screen.
In April 2019 Dr. Buss was honored to address assembled guests at his alma mater at a Biola History Department retirement luncheon. As many students were present he addressed the demands of Clio, the muse of history. Her challenge is to seek truth and retain a firm grip on reality. Professor Buss believes this is the challenge for today both for practicing historians and the rising generation. Dr. Buss has been published on a wide range of subjects in United States' economic, political and religious history, as well as biography.
