Dr. Peter H. Gruen was honored as a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association

With more than 50 years of experience in psychiatric practice, education, and research, Dr. Gruen became an authority in the fields of psychopharmacology and psychoneuroendocrinology. After serving as chief resident in psychiatry at Albert Einstein College of Medicine (AECOM), he became a fellow in liaison and psychosomatic medicine at Montefiore Hospital (AECOM). He then was appointed Clinical Instructor of Psychiatry (AECOM) and principal teacher of psychopharmacology (1973-1975). In 1976, Dr. Gruen was appointed lecturer and research psychiatrist at the New York Psychiatric Institute, and assistant attending psychiatrist at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital.
He returned to AECOM as an assistant professor of neuroscience (1978-1987). His subsequent appointments were Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at New York Medical College (1987-1990) then at New York University School of Medicine from them on.
Dr. Gruen began his higher education at the University of California at Berkeley; he graduated with highest honors in Psychology (1961). He proceeded on to the University of California at San Francisco School of Medicine (UCSF) where he was chosen Regent Scholar. He was also selected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. He was awarded the Mosby Book Award for the highest academic achievement (first in class).
Dr. Gruen has contributed numerous articles to professional journals and books as well as lecturing widely on psychopharmacology and biological psychiatry. He has been a member of several professional organizations: AAAS, American Psychosomatic Society, American Psychopathological Association, and the Society of Biological Psychiatry. He was honored as a distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.
Dr. Gruen credits Dr. Milton Rosenbaum, Edward Saachar, Wagner Bridger and Norman Altman for their friendships, inspiration, and mentoring. He has won a number of accolades and awards throughout his career. Notably he won the Anna Monika Prize for Studies of Depressive Illness (1975). He has appeared in Who's Who in the East, America and the World, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, and Best Doctors in New York.
Dr. Gruen is the proud father of two children and ten spectacular grandchildren. He retired from clinical practice in 2013 and moved from Manhattan to Southern California. He is an avid reader who enjoys particularly classical music, opera, and sharing fine food and wine with friends and family—and has taken up golf.
