Dr. Becchetti is a professor emeritus of physics with more than 45 years of service to the discipline. Mechanically inclined as a child, Dr. Becchetti was fascinated by astronomy and stargazing. After observing Sputnik in orbit as a child, Dr. Becchetti decided to pursue physics, and attended the University of Minnesota, completing a Bachelor of Science in 1965, a Master of Science in 1968, and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1969.
From 1969 to 1971, Dr. Becchetti worked as a research associate at the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen, Denmark. Upon returning to the United States, he became a research associate at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory at the University of California from 1971 to 1973. He joined the University of Michigan as an assistant professor in 1973, rising to the posts of an associate professor in 1976 and a professor of physics in 1982. Dr. Becchetti was subsequently granted emeritus status from the University of Michigan in 2013.
Dr. Becchetti's research contributed to the development of the Exotic Nuclear Beam Production device, a piece of equipment that produced short-lived nuclear beams that permitted novel measurement and observational cases. Taking the first measurement from the aforementioned machine was among his career highlights. He is a frequent contributor to professional journals and has been notably cited in Physics Today. Moreover, Dr. Becchetti is a fellow of the American Physical Society, and was recognized as a National Science Foundation fellow in 1970 and 1971.
