Graves, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished engineering educator, Dr. Graves celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, along with the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. Dr. Graves attended Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York, initially intending to pursue a career in electrical engineering. He instead completed his Bachelor of Science in industrial engineering in 1967 after discovering a passion for the specialization. He continued his education at the University at Buffalo in Buffalo, New York, graduating with his Master of Science in industrial and systems engineering in 1969 and his Doctor of Philosophy in 1974. From 1973 to 1974, Dr. Graves was an instructor of industrial and systems engineering at the University at Buffalo.

From 1974 to 1979, Dr. Graves was assistant professor of industrial and systems engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. He was associate faculty of industrial engineering and operations research at the University of Massachusetts Amherst from 1979 to 1988, adding the role of director of the university's flexible assembly systems laboratory from 1988 to 1991. Going on to join the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, as a professor of decision sciences and engineering systems in 1991, he rose to associate director of the Center for Integrated Electronics and Electronics Manufacturing in 1994. At Rensselaer, Dr. Graves received a major research grant from the National Science Foundation and, along with several corporate co-sponsors, created the Electronics Agile Manufacturing Research Institute. Continuing as its Director until 2005. He received the first Rensselaer Researcher of the Year Award in 2003, leaving in 2003 as an emeritus faculty. Dr. Graves served as chief technical officer of Ve-Design Inc., a 1999 startup company, building upon technologies from his research work and continued in the role to 2014.

He joined Dartmouth College's Thayer School of Engineering in Hanover, New Hampshire as the John H. Krehbiel Sr. chaired professor of engineering and Director of the Engineering Management Master's Program, continuing from 2003 to 2014. He was also an adjunct professor in Dartmouth's Tuck School of Business. He doubled the Program size and thoroughly updated its curriculum as well as developing several new graduate courses. The incorporation of entrepreneurial courses in the Program's curriculum led to his receiving the 2014 Bernard M. Gordon Prize from the National Academy of Engineering

Dr. Graves served as associate editor of the Journal of Manufacturing Systems from 1993 to 2005, and the United States editor of the International Journal of Production Planning and Control from 1992 to 1999. His research focuses on electronics agile manufacturing and flexible assembly systems scheduling, and he has contributed more than 200 articles to professional journals and reports.
