Dr. Clark is a board-certified radiologist and has been a professor emeritus of radiology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) since 2005. In academia for more than 40 years, he began at UNC-CH in 1973 as an associate professor of radiology, and became full professor in 1983, just 10 years into his teaching career. During his tenure, Dr. Clark notably served UNC-CH as scientific integrity officer for the medical school and advisor to the medical class of 1981.
Affiliated with the North Carolina Memorial Hospital for most of his career, Dr. Clark was director of diagnostic radiological research, associate chairman, vice chairman for research, acting chairman and director of the division of general radiology. He was also consultant to the Chief Medical Examiner of North Carolina from 1973-2005. Throughout his career, Dr. Clark conducted extensive research and was published widely as a result, authoring numerous articles in various medical journals, book chapters and texts.
Dr. Clark received a Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude, from Oberlin College in 1962, followed by a Doctor of Medicine from The Johns Hopkins University in 1966. He completed an internship at the University of Kentucky Medical Center and a diagnostic radiology residency and research fellowship at The Johns Hopkins University and hospital. While at Johns Hopkins, he served as chief resident and instructor in radiology. Dr. Clark became board certified in diagnostic radiology by the American Board of Radiology in 1971 before spending two years with the U.S. Public Health Service until 1973. Dr. Clark also graduated from the Management Leadership Institute at North Carolina Memorial Hospital and the UNC-CH School of Business Administration in 1987.
A member and fellow of the American College of Radiology, Dr. Clark is also a member and past president of the Society of Uroradiology. Among other organizations, he was active with the Radiological Society of North America, the North Carolina Medical Society and the Johns Hopkins Medical Association.
An advocate of the arts, Dr. Clark was on the board of directors of the Mallarme Youth Chamber Orchestra and the Raleigh Chamber Music Guild. He formerly served on the board and as president of the Chapel Hill Philharmonia, a community orchestra in which he was a founding member in 1983. He has been principal cellist for 36 years. Outside of the arts, Dr. Clark has served as past trustee and past president of the Eno River Unitarian-Universalist Fellowship.
A Pollack Gold Medalist from the Society of Abdominal Radiology in 2013, Dr. Clark was also recognized for his teaching by receiving a departmental teaching award in 2001. While still in medical school, he received the Henry Strong Denison Research Award from Johns Hopkins in 1966. Securing a UNC-CH faculty research grant from 1974 to 1975 and several National Institute of Health research grants between 1976 and 2004, he was also a James Picker Foundation scholar between 1975 and 1979. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Clark has been featured in over 20 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare.
