Backed by his considerable expertise in engineering, Dr. Yu serves as a postdoctoral scholar at the University of Central Florida, where he focuses on developing new technology for the additive manufacturing of ceramics, bio-material, alloys and carbon fiber reinforced composites. Prior to joining the aforementioned university, he gained valuable industry experience as a research engineer with Dante Solutions between 2017 and 2018. A former research engineer with the Metallurgy & Modeling Co-Op, where he formed limit curve measurements and analysis on aluminum sheet metal using the DIC and CGA methods. Dr. Yu found success as a research assistant at Iowa State University from 2012 until 2016.
Over the years, Dr. Yu has also provided his expertise to a number of publications as a technical reviewer, including the Journal of Manufacturing Systems, the International Journal of Mechanical Sciences, Ceramics International, the Journal of Manufacturing Science and Engineer, the International Journal of Applied Electromagnetics and Mechanics, and many more. Along with other scholars in the field, he has contributed his knowledge to a plethora of articles such as "predictive modeling of material removal rate in chemical mechanical planarization using physics-informed machine learning" and "grinding performance of textured monolayer CBN wheels: undeformed chip thickness non-uniformity modeling and ground surface topography prediction." In order to remain aware of changes in the field, Dr. Yu is affiliated with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
Prior to embarking upon his professional path, Dr. Yu earned a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from Harbin Institute of Technology in 2011. Five years later, he graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy in engineering mechanics from Iowa State University. For his outstanding work, he has been honored many times, earning the Outstanding Student Leader Award from the Harbin Institute of Technology in 2009, a Research Excellence Award and the Alexander Lippisch memorial scholarship in aerospace engineering from Iowa State University in 2015 and the Best Paper Award from the International Journal of Machine Tools and Manufacture in 2019, to name a few. Additionally, he has received more than $1 million in grants to pursue research in various aspects of the field.
