Now a professor emeritus, Dr. Herzog taught mathematics at Pacific Lutheran University for numerous years. Hired in 1967 as an associate professor, he also chaired the department of mathematics and the division of science and was the dean of natural science. He formerly spent four years at Idaho State University and two years at the University of Nebraska. He was likewise a visiting scholar at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand in 1991 and 1993. Dr. Herzog also found success as a consultant for the National Science Foundation in India during the summer of 1967.
An alumnus of Concordia College, Dr. Herzog received a bachelor's degree in 1957, during which time he was also a member of the track team. He then attended the University of Nebraska, where he completed a master's degree in 1959 and a doctorate degree in 1963. In high school, he ran track, achieving fourth in the mile run in his native Minnesota in 1953. Dr. Herzog also played baseball and basketball.
Among other industry-related organizations, Dr. Herzog is a member of the American Association of University Professors, the American Mathematics Society, the National Council Teachers Mathematics, and the Washington State Mathematics Council. He is also a member, a past chairman, and a past treasurer of the Mathematics Association of America. During his career, Dr. Herzog had the pleasure to serve as a chaperone on a backpacking trip to New Zealand with 16 of his students. He also served as a councilman for the Trinity Lutheran Church in Tacoma between 1969 and 1971 and again between 1982 and 1984.
A National Science Foundation fellow at the University of Nebraska between 1961 and 1962, Dr. Herzog also secured a grant from the Foundation between 1963 and 1967 and the Department of Energy between 1976 and 1985. A celebrated Marquis listee, he has been featured in Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the West. Presently, Dr. Herzog splits his time between the U.S. and New Zealand with his wife, Colleen Stratford Bone. Colleen and he met on a mountain in New Zealand while she was leading a hike up Mount Grey. Together, they share 12 children, 21 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
