Mr. Jon Sheldon Guttman has become internationally known for his research and writing on World War I aviation.

During his tenure, Mr. Guttman simultaneously lent his expertise as the editor of the Military History magazine between 1995 and 2006 and edited the Modern Warfare magazine between 1989 and 1990.
Mr. Guttman has become internationally known for his research and writing on World War I aviation. He has also written extensively on naval history and World War II aviation, both in magazine articles and in books. His first book, "Defiance at Sea" was published in Britain in 1995 and has since been reprinted twice. He also authored "Fighting Firsts," an aviation book published in London in 2000. Mr. Guttman later released "World War II in Color" in 2010, followed by "War in the Pacific" in 2011. Additionally, he has published seven books for Osprey's Aircraft of the Aces series and three books for the publisher's Elite Unit series. Outside of his magazine and book contributions, Mr. Guttman has published several softback monographs. In the United States, he served as editor and contributing author of the book "Great Commanders in Action" and was a contributing editor and co-author of "Desert Storm." His first hardcover American-published book, "The Origin of the Fighter Aircraft," was released in 2009, followed by a revision of "Fighting Firsts," "Fighter Aircraft Combat Debuts 1915-1945" in 2014 and "Grim Reapers: French Escadrille 94 in World War I" in 2016.
Mr. Guttman made appearances as a commentator on The History Channel between 2006 and 2007 and parodied a Civil War re-enactor on "The Daily Show" segment, "Southern Discomfort," in 2000. He was also honored by the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum on its Wall of Honor for his work as an aviation historian and author.
Originally, Mr. Guttman worked as an artist for Divisional Ad Comp in Northvale, New Jersey, between 1975 and 1981. He was then taken on board by Dynamic Graphics in Nanuet, New York, and Courier Life in Brooklyn, New York. In 1982, he became a sales manager for First Investors in Hartsdale, New York, for just one year before becoming the art director for Custombook, Inc., in Tappan, New York, a publisher that specializes in church histories.
An alumnus of University at Albany, Mr. Guttman received a Bachelor of Arts in history and a Master of Arts in European history. He later served with the New York and Virginia Army National Guard for more than 20 years, retiring as a master sergeant in the 29th Infantry Division (Light). During his service, Mr. Guttman was called to active duty in and around Washington, DC, during the January 1996 blizzard and on peacekeeping duty in Bosnia and Herzegovina between September 2001 and April 2002.
Mr. Guttman is a member of the League of World War I Aviation Historians, where he was a four-time recipient of the Thornton D. Hooper Award between 1988 and 2016. He is a board of directors member of the Loudoun County Civil War Roundtable and member of the Cross and Cockade International and the American Fighter Aces Association. A celebrated Marquis listee, Mr. Guttman has been featured in the first edition of Who's Who in the Media and Communication and the 24th and 25th editions of Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
