Mr. Leaman is renowned as an esteemed landscape architect and community planner with more than 65 years of innovation in his field. He initially became interested in design and planning due to the influence of a high school art teacher, and pursued an education at Iowa State University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in landscape architecture and urban planning in 1954. Later in his career, he returned to the aforementioned university, earning a master's degree in community and regional planning in 1982. Mr. Leaman is additionally registered as a landscape architect in the states of California, Iowa, Minnesota, and New Mexico.
From 1954 to 1955, Mr. Leaman worked as a landscape architect for the Sam L. Huddleston Office in Denver, Colorado. He relocated to Bartlesville, Oklahoma, in 1955, serving as a landscape architect for Phillips Petroleum Company and in residency with architect Frank Lloyd Wright on the Price Tower from 1957 to 1958. Subsequently, Mr. Leaman actively contributed to Santa Barbara County, California, as a planning technician from 1958 to 1960, a planning consultant from 1960 to 1963, and the planning director from 1963 to 1966.
Mr. Leaman later found success as the planning director for Mason City from 1966 to 1972 and as a landscape architect and a consultant for the Midwest Research Institute of Kansas City, Missouri from 1972 to 1974. He would continue in this role for Hansen, Lind, and Meyer of Iowa City, Iowa, from 1974 to 1976, Sheffler, Leaman, and Rova of Mason City from 1976 to 1978, and RCM Associates, Incorporated, from 1978 to 1982. Mr. Leaman also excelled as the planning director of Albuquerque, New Mexico from 1982 to 1986 and Colorado Springs, Colorado, from 1986 to 1990, before going into private practice in Mason City, Iowa, in 1990, where he remains to this day.
Moreover, Mr. Leaman has been an instructor at Iowa State University since 1990, and considers it an honor to return to his alma mater as a member of its faculty. Notably, he was the recipient of a 1962 Residential Landscape Design Award from the California Landscape Contractors Association. Mr. Leaman further accepted a 1988 Design Achievement Award from the Iowa State University College of Design.
