He has excelled as the President of the MacKinnon Company LLC in Alexandria, Virginia, since 1972. Additionally, he has contributed as President of the International Theos Foundation in Alexandria since 1998. An expert in expense reduction, he has worked as a consultant since 2008. Moreover, Mr. McKinnon taught as an associate professor at the Northern Virginia Community College in Annandale, Virginia, between 2010 and 2015.
Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Mr. McKinnon earned a Bachelor of Arts in history from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, in 1966. He subsequently graduated with a Masters in Management from the George Washington University in 1988. To remain knowledgeable of changes in the field, Mr. McKinnon maintains his affiliation with the American Society of Association Executives and is a Certified Association Executive (CAE).
In a career filled with several highlights, Mr. McKinnon was proud to have become the chief executive officer of multiple associations and manage many large events for the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association. Between himself and his wife, they have financed and established the International Theos Foundation, through which they have donated money to numerous organizations. For a number of years, this foundation helped a tribe in Northern Tanzania to buy food and other necessities for survival. Currently, Mr. McKinnon funds a group called Help for Haiti, and provides financial assistance to seven teachers of grades one through six in Northwestern Haiti.
Civically, Mr. McKinnon completed service in the United States Naval Reserve between 1966 and 1972, where he achieved the rank of a lieutenant. During his time, he was stationed in Panama and later volunteered to serve in Vietnam. He served two tours in Vietnam and was later assigned as a Naval Intelligence Officer at the Pentagon. For his noble service to his country, he was presented with a Bronze Star Medal with a "Combat V". Likewise, Mr. McKinnon was honorably featured in several editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the World.
