Dr. Koenig is a professor emeritus and the founder of the college of information and computer science at Long Island University. Retired since 2016, he taught information science courses on campus for 16 years. His tenure in academia, however, spans close to 30 years. Prior to his commitment at LIU, Dr. Koenig was a professor and the dean of the school of library and information science at Dominican University in River Forest, Illinois, and an associate professor at Columbia University. Additionally, Dr. Koenig contributed in his field for more than 40 years, advancing from the role of information services manager with Pfizer, Inc. in Groton, Connecticut, to vice president of information management with Tradenet, Inc. in New York City.
A prominent figure in his field, Dr. Koenig has authored or co-authored more than 100 articles in various professional journals and has lent his expertise to serve on the editorial boards of more than a dozen professional journals in his field. Involved in his local community, Dr. Koenig also served as a board member for various local libraries for many years.
Dr. Koenig received a Bachelor of Arts in psychology at Yale University in 1963. He subsequently attended the University of Chicago, from which he acquired a Master of Library Science in 1968 and a Master of Business Administration in mathematical methods and computers in 1970. Concluding his academic efforts, Dr. Koenig obtained a Doctor of Philosophy in information science at Drexel University in 1982.
Dr. Koenig notably served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy between 1963 and 1965 and in the Reserves between 1965 and 1973. In 2015, he received an Award of Merit from the Association for Information Science and Technology, the highest award, the Award of Merit. Dr. Koenig previously received a Jason Farradane Award from the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals in the United Kingdom in 2013.
Dr. Koenig is a member and a past president of the International Society for Scientometrics and Informetrics and a former councilor of the American Library Association. He is also a member of the American Society of Information Science, the Association for Computing Machinery, and the Special Librarians Association. Meanwhile, some of his avocational memberships include the Grolier Club, the Caxton Club, and the Elizabethan Club. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Koenig has been featured in approximately 35 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, and Who's Who in Media and Communication.
