He was awarded the National Research Service Award at the University of Chicago from 1977 to 1979, a Research Fellow at the Illinois State Psychiatric Institute under Director John Davis, M.D. from 1977 until 1980, an intern at the Illinois State Psychiatric Institute between 1980 and 1981, and a psychologist at St. Elizabeth's Hospital (now St. Elizabeth's Medical Center) from 1981 to 1982. Dr. Killian was active as a professor of psychology at Nova Southeastern University from 1982 to 1993, a court-appointed evaluator between 1993 to 1995, a partner at Adaptivation, Inc. from 1996 until 2001, and a member of the quality assurance committee at PsychCare from 1996 to 1998.
Prior to becoming an esteemed psychologist, Dr. Killian pursued higher education with a Bachelor of Arts from New College of Florida in 1972. He earned a Master of Social Science from the University of Chicago in 1975 and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Chicago in 1981. He is board certified by the American Association of Managed Care Providers, the American Board of Medical Psychotherapists, the American Board of Disability Analysts and a licensed psychologist in the State of Florida. Dr. Killian was mentored by Bruno Bettelheim, Philip Holzman and William Henry.
Outside of his professional responsibilities, Dr. Killian remains informed of the changes and advancements in psychology through relevant organizations. He is a member of the Florida Psychological Association, the American Psychological Association, and the National Register of Health Service Psychologists. Dr. Killian has contributed over 40 articles to professional journals and authored Successful Parenting, the Greatest Gift to Give Your Child in 2016.
In light of his many achievements in the field, Dr. Killian has received a number of awards and accolades throughout his career. He was named to Personalities of America by the American Biographical Institute in 1990, a Top Doctor in Psychology in 2017 and a Commission Kentucky Colonel from the Commonwealth of Kentucky in 1988. Likewise, Dr. Killian won the National Research Service Award from the University of Chicago from 1977 to 1979 and the Noyes Foundation Award from 1974 to 1977.
