Now retired, Dr. Packard's career surged with seminal research in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance at Stanford University (1944-1951), leading to applications in scientific instrumentation with global outreach through Varian Associates (1951-1990). As the initial company in the Stanford Research Park, Varian Associates brought together inventors and scientists with a passion for discovery and innovation, later reflected in the emerging culture at the roots of Silicon Valley. Starting as a Research Physicist (1951-1953), Dr. Packard advanced to Director of Research in the Instrument Division (1953-1963). As the company expanded into international markets, he provided leadership as Vice President of the Analytical Instrument Division (1963-1966), returning to the Instrument Division as Vice President (1966-1969), Corporate Vice President (1969-1975), and Assistant to the Chairman (1975-1984). With executive restructuring, Dr. Packard served as Assistant to the Executive Vice President (1984-1990) until retirement.
Co-authoring his first publication (1947) with his major professor and Nobel Prize Winner, Dr. Felix Bloch, Dr. Packard published 17 articles and registered 2 patents. Membership in professional societies included: International Society for Magnetic Resonance, The Bioelectromagnetics Society, The American Physical Society, the American Chemical Society, The New York Academy of Sciences, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Dr. Packard's outstanding international reputation has been recognized with the IEEE Morris E. Leeds Award (1971) and an Award Commemorating 50 Years of NMR Spectroscopy, ENC Experimental Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Conference (1995). His service to non-profit organizations that promote canine health was acclaimed by the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of America (1990) and International Elbow Working Group (2000).
Throughout his career and retirement, Dr. Packard encouraged start-up enterprises and community organizations contributing to productivity and quality of life in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond. He served as Chairman of the Board for Vega Biotechnologies, Inc., Opportunity Capital Corporation, and Addiction Research Foundation. As an advocate of quality education and outdoor experiences, he served as President of the Ravenswood School Board (1960) and a committee member for the Boys Scouts of America-Stanford Area Council (1972-1980). He collaborated with his wife, Barbara Packard, as co-founders of Winedot Kennels, Inc., and a non-profit organization, Institute for Genetic Disease Control, thereby promoting care and well-being of companion dogs.
Dr. Packard's career began with employment at Westinghouse Research Labs during the war effort, after graduation with a BA in Physics from Oregon State University (1942). Parenthetically, his early curiosity about electronics and his innovative spirit were encouraged by his father, Dr. Earl Leroy Packard, who was the first Dean of the College of Sciences at Oregon State College. At the Westinghouse labs, a vibrant intellectual community introduced Martin Packard to inventive researchers who later shaped his career, such as Daniel Alpert, William W. Hansen, Frederick Terman, Edward L. Ginzton, and Russel H. Varian. The Westinghouse research group was transferred to the Manhattan Project in the Radiation Laboratory of Dr. Ernest O. Lawrence at the University of California at Berkeley. At the end of World War II (1945), Dr. Alpert introduced Martin to Dr. Felix Bloch in the Physics Department at Stanford University. Martin's ingenuity with electronics earned him a valued role on the research team that investigated nuclear induction and resulted in his PhD from Stanford University (1949). While Dr. Packard served as a teaching assistant at Stanford, several students became part of the network from which Varian Associates recruited scientists.
