Growing up on a farm, Dr. Howland was intrigued by veterinarians' work with farm animals. Over the years, his focus turned from wanting to treat animals to wanting to work with people. As a teenager, he worked in a hospital to explore the medical profession and was especially impressed by the orthopedic surgeon for which he worked. Now retired, he worked as an orthopedic surgeon for Mercy Medical Center and Redding Medical Center between 1969 and 1997. Additionally, Dr. Howland gained valuable expertise working in Europe and as chief of orthopedics at Fort Dix in New Jersey.
An expert in his field, Dr. Howland earned a Doctor of Medicine from New York Medical College before interning at Kaiser Permanente in San Francisco. Subsequently, he pursued and completed a residency through Fitzsimons General Hospital. Throughout his career, he retained his professional alignment with the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons, through which he is a fellow. Although his career has been filled with highlights, Dr. Howland is especially proud of the books he has written and published, including "A California Bonesetter's Autobiography," "A History of Orthopedics," and "Life and Lectures of Lent Johnson, MD."
Looking toward the future, Dr. Howland intends to revel in the legacy he has created for his family. Along with his wife, Cynthia, he is the proud parent of Keith, David, Scott, Craig and Tracey. Additionally, Dr. Howland has been overjoyed to welcome 15 grandchildren and 15 great-children into his immediate family.
