Dr. Nan-Yao Su Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

A distinguished professor of urban entomology, Dr. Su has been teaching at the University of Florida in Fort Lauderdale for the past 35 years. Hired in 1984 as an assistant professor, he advanced to the position of a full professor by 1994. Prior to his tenure in Florida, Dr. Su was a postdoctoral associate in the entomology department at Louisiana State University and an assistant entomologist and research assistant in the entomology department at the University of Hawaii.

A nationally and internationally known expert on termites, Dr. Su is well known for his approach to the population management of these insects. His studies on the population ecology of subterranean termites, and on slow-acting toxicants which have notably led to the development of a baiting system for population control. This is known as the Sentricon termite colony elimination system, which is now used in 38 countries and three million homes around the world, and has reduced the use of pesticides by 9,000 metric tons. It has also been widely used to protect historic monuments. The Sentricon system was the recipient of the Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge, which was granted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Born in Taiwan, Dr. Su attended the Kyoto Institute of Technology, from which he received a Bachelor of Science in 1975. Continuing his studies at the aforementioned school, he further obtained a Master of Science in 1977. He subsequently transferred to the University of Hawaii, where he concluded his academic efforts with a Doctor of Philosophy in 1982. Since graduating, Dr. Su has served as a technical advisor for such foreign governments as New Zealand, China and Vietnam. He also co-edited "Biology and Control of the Formosan Sub-Termite" in 1987, holds 10 U.S. patents, and has contributed multiple articles to professional journals in his area of expertise.

Dr. Su has been active as a member and a former organizing committee chairman of the International Isoptera Society. He was president of the Florida Entomological Society, where he was honored with an Achievement Award for Research in 1992. Among other professional organizations, Dr. Su is a member of the Entomological Society of America, where he serves as the co-editor-in-chief for the society's flagship journal, Journal of Economic Entomology and the International Union of the Study of Social Insects. Locally, Dr. Su has been a contributing member of Amnesty International in New York since 1987.

In 2009, Dr. Su established the Nan-Yao Su Award for Innovation and Creativity in Entomology with the Entomological Society of America. Very proud of this honor, the award, which bears his name, allows for scientists to develop unique solutions to solve difficult entomology questions. Honored for his achievements, he has received several awards in his own right, including an Individual Research Achievement Award from the U.S. Secretary of Agricultural in 1996, Fellow of the Entomological Society of America in 2007, Medal of Honor by the Entomological Foundation in 2012, an inductee of the Florida Inventors Hall of Fame in 2015, and Lifetime Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors in 2016. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Su has been cited in the 65th edition of Who's Who in America and the 22nd through 25th editions of Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
