BETHESDA, MD, September 26, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Christine D. Berg, MD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Berg celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Inspired to work in medicine after her brother passed away from a brain tumor, Dr. Berg now serves other cancer patients as a successful radiation oncologist. Since 2015, she has served as a special adviser to the director of the division of cancer epidemiology and genetics at the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health (NIH). Likewise, she is the former chief of the early detection research group, a division of cancer prevention at the NIH, where she notably served as a project officer for the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian Cancer Screening Trial (PLCO) and the National Lung Screening Trial (NLST). This work has been instrumental in influencing national policy for Medicare and for attaining insurance coverage for lung cancer screening. Additionally, Dr. Berg held roles at the Suburban Hospital as the cancer center director and at the Georgetown University Medical School Lombardi Cancer Center as the head of breast cancer radiation oncology, as well as the director of the residency training program.
A practicing physician of 40 years, Dr. Berg is board certified in internal medicine, medical oncology, and radiation oncology. Her research efforts focus on cancer risk-based assessment and how to integrate molecular epidemiology and then move these efforts into the clinical arena. As an expert in precision cancer screening, she has focused on cancer screening as opposed to cancer treatment over the past two decades because, she explains, it is better to detect cancer early, which gives patients a better chance at survival and a cure. It is also better to tailor the recommendations as precisely as possible so that individuals can benefit from the most up-to-date screening for their level of cancer risk. Since 2017, Dr. Berg has been consulting for GRAIL, Inc., a healthcare company whose mission is to detect cancer early, when it can be cured, and since 2013 has been consulting for Medial EarlySign, LLC, an organization that helps healthcare clients with their early detection and prevention of high-burden diseases using routine, existing EHR data.
Dr. Berg has written extensively in her field. She is the co-editor of "Cancer Prevention and Screening: Concepts, Principles and Controversies" in 2018. She also served on the editorial board for several professional journals, including the Journal Watch Women's Health, and The Oncologist. Dr. Berg has published 10 articles in the New England Journal of Medicine, contributed 130 peer reviewed scientific publications, and has authored several book chapters and monographs.
An alumnus of Northwestern University, Dr. Berg received a Bachelor of Science in 1975 and a Doctor of Medicine in 1977. She is licensed to practice medicine in the District of Columbia and Maryland. Since concluding her academic efforts, she has retained her professional affiliation with several industry-related organizations. In particular, she is a member of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer, the American Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American College of Physicians, and the American Medical Association. Dr. Berg also served on the executive committee of the Association of Residents in Radiation Oncology from 1984 until 1986.
Locally, Dr. Berg serves on the climate victory council of the League of Conservation Voters and served on the advisory board of the Chesapeake Physicians for Social Responsibility. She hopes to soon become a voice on climate change and use her lung cancer knowledge to work more closely on the environmental risk that poses a threat to people.
A recipient of an American Cancer Society fellowship, Dr. Berg also received multiple awards from the NIH, including a 2011 Director's Award, 2010 Award of Merit for Ovarian Cancer Early Detection, and the Merit Group Award for Scientific Leadership in 2005. Other awards to her credit include a Teacher of the Year and Resident Award from Georgetown University Hospital in the department of radiation medicine for 1987 and 1988, as well as a Recognition Award from the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer in 2011. Moreover, Dr. Berg bears the distinction of holding membership in the honorable society of Alpha Omega Alpha.
In recognition of outstanding contributions to her profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Christine D. Berg, MD, has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
