Accruing 40 years in teaching and academe, Dr. Stevenson-Moessner has been a professor of pastoral care and pastoral theology at Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University (Dallas) since 2005. She also has served as an associate professor of pastoral theology and Christian formation at the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary in Iowa from 1997 to 2005. Dr. Stevenson-Moessner began her career teaching at St. Mary's Episcopal School in Memphis, then following her doctoral program in Europe, taught as an adjunct assistant professor of practical theology at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, GA, from 1986-1997. She concurrently served as an adjunct faculty member at Samford University in Birmingham, AL, and the Candler School of Theology at Emory University, as well as a counseling staff member with the Georgia Association for Pastoral Care.
Prior to embarking on her professional path, Dr. Stevenson-Moessner pursued a formal education at St. Mary's Episcopal School in Memphis, TN, studying between 1955 and 1966. She then attended Vanderbilt University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1970, and Princeton Theological Seminary, where she received a Master of Arts in 1975. She went on to obtain a Doctor of Theology at the University of Basel in Switzerland in 1986. Additionally, Dr. Stevenson-Moessner was ordained to ministry by the Presbyterian Church (PCUSA) and invited into membership in the International Academy of Practical Theology.
Outside of her field of education and research, Dr. Stevenson-Moessner served on the Board of Trustees for Southern Methodist University (2016-2017), as well as St. Mary's Episcopal School between 2002 and 2005. A prolific writer, she has authored twelve books beginning with Theological Dimensions of Maturation in a Missionary Milieu, published in 1989. The editor or co-editor of four groundbreaking books in a pastoral care of women, Women in Travail and Transition (1991), Through the Eyes of Women (1996), In Her Own Time (2000) and Women Out of Order (2010), Dr. Stevenson-Moessner has also written numerous other titles, including Prelude to Practical Theology in 2008, Portable Roots: Transplanting the Bi-cultural Child in 2014, The Elephant in the Church in 2013, A Primer in Pastoral Care in 2005, Overture to Practical Theology in 2016, and The Spirit of Adoption in 2003, winning awards for two of these. Additionally, she has maintained involvement with the American Academy of Religion and the Society for Pastoral Theology, of which she was President.
In light of her exceptional undertakings, Dr. Stevenson-Moessner was named a Karl Barth scholar by the University of Basel in 1981. Since 2000, she has also been a Henry Luce III Fellow, a Resident Member and McCord Fellow of the Center for Theological Inquiry in Princeton (2012), a Fellow in the American Association of Pastoral Counselors, and a Psychotherapist in the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education. Furthermore, she has been listed in the 17th edition of Who's Who in the World.
