Dr. McMillan is a physicist and consultant with more than 50 years of accomplished service in his field. Interested in science since his childhood, he attended the Alabama Polytechnic Institute, now Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama, graduating with a Bachelor of Engineering Physics in 1957. From 1958 to 1960, he served as a lieutenant in the United States Air Force. Upon returning to civilian life, he continued his education, earning a Master of Science from Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida, in 1966. Dr. McMillan concluded his formal studies in 1974 with a Doctor of Philosophy in Physics from the University of Florida, Gainesville, FL.
Dr. McMillan worked as an engineer for the Westinghouse Electric Corporation in Pittsburgh, PA and Baltimore, MD from 1960 to 1961, after working briefly for this company in Pittsburgh after graduation and before being called into the Air Force in 1957. He then joined Martin Marietta Aerospace, Orlando, FL, where he worked as a Staff Engineer until 1976. From 1976 to 1998, he served as a Principal Research Scientist at the Georgia Tech Research Institute of the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, GA. The last four years of his tenure at Georgia Tech were spent as an Intergovernmental Personnel Act appointee to the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory in Rome, NY. Dr. McMillan completed his 54-year formal working career as a Senior Research Scientist for the United States Army Space and Missile Defense Command, Redstone Arsenal, AL, retiring in 2011.
Dr. McMillan shares his professional expertise as a conference chairman and presenter at conferences and as a contributing author for professional journals. Since retirement, he has served as a consultant for Auburn University and for Prometheus, Inc., a small business in Sharon, MA. He holds patents in electronic circuits, microwave and optical technology. Active in his community, he has participated as a board member and as president of his community homeowners association as well as a volunteer mathematics and science tutor at the Franklin County School, Eastpoint, FL and at the Franklin County Jail since 2013. Dr. Robert McMillan is a Baptist and has served as a Sunday School Teacher as well as at other leadership positions in his church. He has been married to his wife, Ann, for 64 years, without whose help and support he would have accomplished virtually nothing.
