Ms. Barbara Jean Lauritsen Christensen was honored twice with a Woman of Achievement Award for Education in North Platte in 1998 and 2016.

Now a retired medical/surgical nurse and educator, Ms. Christensen celebrates 50 wonderful years in the field. Teaching nursing courses at St. Joseph's Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Sioux City, Iowa, and at St. Francis Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colorado, early on in her career, by 1972 she was acquired by Mid-Plains Community College in North Platte, Nebraska, as a medical/surgery nurse educator. She remained a faculty member on campus until her retirement in 2008. Additionally, Ms. Christensen worked in the field as medical surgery nurse at Great Plains Regional Medical Center, a non-profit health organization, between 1991 and 2002, and was appointed a nurse representative by former governor Benjamin Nelson for the Nebraska Board of Health between 1992 and 1994.
Chosen by Mosby Elsevier to serve as the co-editor of a widely acclaimed nursing book, "Foundations of Nursing and Adult Health Nursing" from 1991 to 2011, Ms. Christensen helped publish six editions of the book. She was also a nurse reviewer for the 10th edition of "Comprehensive Review of Practice Nursing" in 1990.
Born in Sioux Rapids, Iowa, Ms. Christensen graduated from Greenville Rossie, Iowa, high school as one of only 11 in her graduating class. She graduated from St. Joseph's Mercy School of Nursing in Sioux City, Iowa, where she received a diploma in 1956. She later received a bachelor's and master's degree at the University of Nebraska in 1978 and 1988, respectively. She is a certified registered nurse.
Ms. Christensen was a member of the National League for Nursing. Locally, she spent time as a a member of the North Platte swim team board of directors and is currently serving on the North Platte Opportunity Center as a board member. She served as president of the Washington Parent Teacher Association in North Platte, where she notably received an honorary state life membership for her contributions to the organization.
Honored twice with a Woman of Achievement Award for Education in North Platte in 1998 and 2016, Ms. Christensen is also a celebrated Marquis listee. She has been featured in the third edition of Who's Who Among Human Services Professionals and the fourth and fifth editions of Who's Who in American Nursing.
