In 2018, after twenty years, Dr. Lionel Ingram retired from the University of New Hampshire as a Murkland Principal Lecturer in Political Science, emeritus.

The child of a military family who had the value of service instilled in him from an early age, Dr. Ingram graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1963. He then earned at Harvard University a Master of Arts in public administration in 1966 and a Doctor of Philosophy in political economy and government in 1995.
His first overseas assignment of thirty years of military service was as a troop commander in the 2nd squadron, 17th Airborne Cavalry, 101st Airborne Division, in Vietnam, earning a Soldiers Medal, a Bronze Star with a V, a Bronze Star, and a Combat Infantry Badge. After teaching at West Point and another tour in Vietnam, he was a cavalry squadron operations officer and then served in the Office of the Secretary of Defense. Following command of a tank battalion, he was the deputy director of the policy and plans division for the United States Mission to NATO from 1982 to 1987. From 1987 to 1988, he was the academic director of the NATO course at tbe National Defense University.
His final military service was as the military attaché in Copenhagen, Denmark, and Vilnius, Lithuania from 1989 to 1993. He retired as a colonel, having received, among other awards, two Defense Superior Service medals, a Legion of Merit, and the Danish honor of Commander of the Order of the Dannebrog.
Continuing his concern for service, since retiring, he has served as the co-director of the Rotary District's outdoor youth leadership camp, a selectman for the Town of Exeter, New Hampshire, the chairman for the Town's dam removal committee, and the chair of the Town's historical society. In 2018, after twenty years, he retired from the University of New Hampshire as a Murkland Principal Lecturer in Political Science, emeritus. He has been a fellow of the National Science Foundation and a member of the International Institute of Strategic Studies.
