Dr. Jones is renowned as a botanist and an educator with more than 45 years of distinguished service in his field to his credit. He initially pursued an education at Ohio University, studying history and government with the intention of becoming a lawyer, but realized his true passion when he attended a botany class. While at Ohio University, Dr. Jones was an accomplished football player, helping lead his team to win the 1963 Mid-American Conference Championship.
Dr. Jones graduated with a Bachelor of Science in 1964 from Ohio University. He subsequently concluded his academic efforts at Indiana University, where he earned a Doctor of Philosophy in botany in 1969. From 1969 to 1973, Dr. Jones excelled as an assistant professor of botany at California State University, Fullerton, rising to the post of an associate professor from 1973 to 1977.
Dr. Jones became a full professor at California State University, Fullerton, in 1977. Likewise, Dr. Jones was active as the chairman of the department of biological sciences at the aforementioned university from 1989 to 2004. Accepting professor emeritus status from California State University, Fullerton, in 1999, Dr. Jones formally retired in 2010.
Dr. Jones had found success as the director of the Faye McFadden Herbarium at California State University for the duration of his career, 1968 to 2010. He is the founding director of the 25-acre Fullerton Arboretum, where he served from 1970 to 1980. The establishment, funding, and construction of the Arboretum is the highlight of Dr. Jones' career, and he is proud to have helped realize the project.
Dr. Jones has been notably recognized as a Distinguished Faculty Member by the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at California State University, Fullerton. The editor of "Handbook of Experimental Pollination Biology" in 1983, he is the author of "A Dictionary of Botany" as well as numerous articles for professional journals. Moreover, Dr. Jones is a member of the American Institute for Biological Science and the Botanical Society of America.
