Dr. Heath is a biological science educator with more than 50 years of distinguished contribution to his discipline. Having drawn much influence from his father, who was a lecturer at the Museum of Science and Industry, he was inspired to pursue a scientific career in his own right. Dr. Heath attended the University of Michigan, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in 1963, and earned a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Southern California in 1968.
Dr. Heath was a postdoctoral fellow at the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena from 1968 to 1970, and at the University of Georgia, Athens, from 1975 until 1976. He began his career in 1970 at Kent State University, Ohio, where he served as a professor of biological sciences until 2008, and the director of the Water Resources Research Institute between 1993 and 2008. Dr. Heath was granted emeritus status in 2008.
Since 1997, Dr. Heath has been a member of the Ohio Coastal Resources Advisory Council, an advisory council to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. He is a research grantee of the United States National Science Foundation and the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration. Dr. Heath is a contributor to professional journals and has written chapters for books, an accomplishment he is most proud of. His research has focused on re-examination of accepted standards for tracing phosphorus and organic molecules in compounds used in streams and lakes. He is a fellow of the Cooperative Institute for Limnology and Ecosystem Research and a member of the American Society of Limnology and Oceanography.
