Now a professor emeritus at the Indiana University School of Medicine, Dr. Miyamoto celebrates close to 50 years in academia and medicine. During his tenure at the university, he served as chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology from 1987 to 2014 and as chief of otology and neurotology in the Department of Otology, Head and Neck Surgery. He was named Arilla Spence DeVault professor in 1991. Additionally, Dr. Miyamoto was affiliated with Wishard Memorial Hospital, where he served as chief of otolaryngology, head and neck surgery between 1979 and 2002.
A proven leader in the profession, during his tenure, Dr. Miyamoto focused much of his research on cochlear implants. He received continuous funding through the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders for his work and twice served on the organization's advisory council. As a result of his research, Dr. Miyamoto authored numerous scholarly articles and served on multiple national and international editorial boards, including for the American Journal of Otology, the Anales de Otorhinolaryngology Mexicana, the World Journal of Otorhinolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, Cochlear Implants International, Auris Nasus Larynx, and Laryngoscope Investigative Otolaryngology. He was an associate editor of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and the Journal of the Association for Research in Otolaryngology.
An alumnus of Wheaton College, Dr. Miyamoto received a Bachelor of Science, cum laude, in 1966. He then acquired a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Michigan in 1970. He completed an internship and surgical residency at Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and a second residency in otolaryngology at the Indiana University School of Medicine. Dr. Miyamoto then served two years as a major in the U.S. Air Force before completing a fellowship in otology and neurotology at St. Vincent Hospital and Otologic Medical Group in Los Angeles and a Master of Science in otology at the University of Southern California in 1978. He received an honorary Doctor of Engineering from the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in 2001.
A member of the Collegium Otorhinolaryngologicum Amicitiae Sacrum and the National Academy of Medicine, Dr. Miyamoto is also a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and of the Royal Society of Medicine. He served as president of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, the Association of Academic Departments of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, the American Neurotology Society, the Otosclerosis Study Group and the Association for Research in Otolaryngology, and remained a member of several other industry related organizations as well.
Involved with a broad range of charitable and civic organizations, Dr. Miyamoto served on the advisory board for The Ear Foundation and the Alexander Graham Bell Association and was on the advisory board of the National Institutes of Health. He was the founding advisory board member and chairman of the St. Joseph Institute for Deaf – Indianapolis. Dr. Miyamoto was a Director of American Board of Otolaryngology and served on the Residency Review Committee. Additionally, he served on the Advisory Board of the Deafness Research Foundation from 2003 to 2014 and as President of its Centurions from 2005 to 2008.
In 2018, Dr. Miyamoto was awarded a Ritchey Emeriti Faculty Service Award and a President's Medal from Indiana University. He previously received an Award of Merit from the American Otological Society in 2014. A celebrated Marquis listee, he has been featured in approximately 65 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare and Who's Who in the World.
