Mr. Barefoot led a wonderful career that began in New York City in 1967 as a trainee with Merrill Lynch. Employed with the company for the next 25 years, he worked his way up from an analyst to senior managing director, working throughout New York, Chicago, Cleveland and San Francisco. In 1992, he retired and established Frontier Sports Development Corporation as the founder and chief executive officer. Two years later, Mr. Barefoot returned to Wall Street to join PaineWebber Inc. where he served as director of investment banking until late 2000 when he joined NeoVision Hypersystems as President & CEO until its sale in 2001. He then became president of his alma mater, Babson College, in Wellesley, where he remained for another seven years.
Throughout his entire career, Mr. Barefoot has been especially proud of his time spent in academia. Prior to becoming the president at Babson, he served as a trustee for the college between 1986 and 2001 and the chair between 1996 and 2001. Mr. Barefoot was additionally a trustee at Kent Place School in Summit, New Jersey, Saint Edwards School in Vero Beach, Florida, and currently Burr & Burton Academy in Manchester, Vermont.
Mr. Barefoot is a former director for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts and currently serves on its Investment Committee. He was also a Director of Cynosure Inc., Greeley Co. and Array Health. He was affiliated with the Council on Competitiveness, a nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C. whose goal is to increase the U.S.'s economic competitiveness in the global marketplace. He was also involved with the American Council on Education's committee on international initiatives, a higher education non-profit that include leaders of approximately 1,700 accredited, degree-granting colleges and universities and higher education-related associations, organizations and corporations. Venturing into politics, in 2013 he was elected Mayor of Indian River Shores, FL. until retiring in 2018. Today he currently serves as a director of BigBelly Solar, Adjoint Inc. and is a senior advisor to Carl Marks & Co., Little Harbor Advisors and Harmoney Ltd. in Auckland, NZ. Additionally, he is Vice Chair of the Cleveland Clinic Indian River Foundation and a Trustee of Southern Vermont Medical Center.
Born in Cincinnati, Mr. Barefoot attended a boarding school in Michigan before attending Union College in Schenectady, New York. Majoring in engineering, after his sophomore year he transferred to Babson College where he developed an interest in finance and investments. Graduating with a Bachelor of Science in 1966, he then served in the U.S. Army Reserves between 1967 and 1972, during which time he acquired a Master of Business Administration at Pace College in 1970. Mr. Barefoot also received an honorary Doctor of Law from Babson College.
Mr. Barefoot was a member of the Economic Club of New York, the Bond Club of San Francisco and the Bond Club of New York. Among other avocational memberships, he is currently the president of the Ekwanok Country Club as of 2017. In his free time, Mr. Barefoot prefers such diversions as golf and racket-based sports.
In 1998, Mr. Barefoot received an Ellis Island Medal of Honor. He was also responsible for the establishment of the Brian M. Barefoot Athletics Challenge at Babson College in 2015. Named in his honor, the challenge promotes an annual tradition of giving through sports, challenging fellow alumni athletes and parents of student-athletes to make a gift during the last week of March, which go directly to support said student-athletes. During the challenge, teams have the opportunity to earn $5,000, $3,000 or $2,000 in additional funding by securing gifts from alumni and parent donors. A celebrated Marquis listee, Mr. Barefoot has been featured in Who's Who in America and Who's Who in Finance and Industry.
