Initially earning an Associate's degree in humanities with honors from Jamestown Community College in 1980, Ms. West concluded her academic efforts at Empire State College, a part of the State University of New York system, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in 1984 and a Master of Arts in 1992. From 1975 to 1980, she served as the executive director of operations and public relations for KND Leasing, Incorporated. Following this appointment, she found success as an affirmative action officer and the director of community relations at Jamestown Community College and, eventually, the interim vice president of university advancement for the State University of New York. Ms. West excelled as the director of development, a coordinator of the presidential search college, the director of corporate foundation and college relations for the State University of New York, as well as the executive assistant to the president of college affairs for the State University of New York at Fredonia. She retired in 2017 as senior director of development.

Demonstrating unmatched skill in her industry, Ms. West has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the Spirit Fredonia Award, the Outstanding Alumni Achievement Award from Empire State College, and the Heart of Fredonia, awarded by SUNY Fredonia President Virginia Horvath.
Interested in remaining aware of developments in her industry, Ms. West was affiliated with the Empire State College Graduate Student Association, the Council of University Affairs and Development for the State University of New York, the Chautauqua Leadership Network, the Fredonia Chamber of Commerce and the Empire State College Foundation, often serving in leadership roles. She served as the chairman of the search and screen committee for the Chautauqua area council of the Girl Scouts of the USA in 1984 as well as 1988. Likewise, Ms. West has been honored in several editions of Who's Who in American Education, as well as the first edition of Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
