He previously worked for the aforementioned university in the roles of executive associate dean for clinical affairs, and as an executive director of the faculty practice plan from 1989 to 2015. Prior to these positions, Dr. Smith contributed to the University of Alabama in Huntsville School of Primary Medical Care from 1986 until 1989 in the progressively responsible roles of the chief of family medicine, and dean.
Dr. Smith offered his services at Wright University from 1979 to 1986, when he found success as an assistant professor, then an associate professor. He began his career as a resident in psychiatry at the University of North Carolina Medical Center between 1974 and 1975. He progressed into the post of a resident in family practice at University of North Carolina Medical Center from 1975 until 1978. Following this role, Dr. Smith operated for one year in a private practice in Muscatine, Iowa.
Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Smith pursued an education at the University of North Carolina, earning a Bachelor of Science in 1974. He completed additional coursework at the aforementioned university, from which he graduated with a Doctor of Medicine in 1974. Moreover, Dr. Smith is a diplomate of the American Board of Family Practice, for which he served on the board and carried the title of the president in 1991.
Having contributed numerous articles to professional journals, Dr. Smith is the author of "Family Practice Desk Reference" and the editor of "Primary Care Currents." He was the deputy editor of American Family Physician from 1987 to 2004. A valuable member of the American Medical Association and the Arkansas Medical Association, he was honored as a distinguished guest speaker by Alpha Epsilon Delta in 2014. Dr. Smith received a Leadership in Family Medicine Award in 2019 from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.
