The highlight of Dr. Joseph M. Shaw's career was working with the history of St. Olaf College.

Supported by a wealth of professional experience and an impressive academic background, Dr. Shaw excelled as an educator with his alma mater, St. Olaf College in Northfield for more than three decades. At the beginning of his career, he served at the aforementioned college as an instructor of religion in 1957. After two years in this post, he found further success as an assistant professor and an associate professor before eventually becoming appointed as a full professor in 1968. Moreover, he contributed to St. Olaf College as the chairman for the department of religion until 1988. Dr. Shaw subsequently retired from St. Olaf College upon attaining the designation of professor emeritus in 1991.
During his nearly 35 year tenure with the department of religion at St. Olaf College, Dr. Shaw taught the introductory bible courses, church history, the Greek language, and upper level courses regarding the New Testament. With the help of colleagues from the College of Saint Catherine, Luther College, and Saint John's University, Dr. Shaw became involved in the Christian Humanism project, utilizing grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities in the late 1970s. As a result, new courses were added to the curriculum, festivals were presented at the four colleges, and two publications were produced.
The highlight of Dr. Shaw's career was working with the history of St. Olaf College. It was a turning point when the president of the institution commissioned him to write the centennial history of the college, which was later published in 1974. Prior to embarking upon his professional path, Dr. Shaw enlisted in the United States Naval Reserve in 1944, where he completed service as an ensign until his honorable discharge in 1946.
Soon thereafter, Dr. Shaw pursued a formal education at St. Olaf College, earning a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, in 1949. He later obtained a Bachelor of Theology from the Luther Seminary in Saint Paul, Minnesota, in 1953. Furthermore, Dr. Shaw concluded his academic efforts with a Doctor of Philosophy from the Princeton Theological Seminary in 1958.
