Ms. Strauss is the retired executive director of the Leo Baeck Institute in New York City. She attended Columbia University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in 1970, and completed her education in 1973 with a Master of Science from Hunter College. Ms. Strauss was drawn to her profession based on her own personal history and heritage, with a particular emphasis on transatlantic relations and German-American history and relations.
From 1972 until 1979, Ms. Strauss was an assistant book editor for the Council on Foreign Relations, New York City. She became a senior editor and a director of publishing affairs at the Hudson Institute of Indianapolis from 1984 to 1989, and a senior editor and consultant for the 20th Century Fund in New York City between 1990 and 1994. In 1994, Ms. Strauss became the executive director of the Leo Baeck Institute, at which she was responsible for the growth and direction of a research library and archive of 19th and 20th century German-language Jewish culture. She remained with the Leo Baeck Institute until her retirement in 2016.
Ms. Strauss has been widely honored for her work with the Leo Baeck Institute. Among other accolades, she was the recipient of The Order of Merit First Class from German President Horst Kohler in 2005 for her work in positively reconnecting descendants of the World War II-era German Jewish diaspora with German culture, and the Commanders Cross of The Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany by President Joachim Gauck in 2014, for outstanding work in German-American relations. In addition, she received a 2014 Ellis Island Medal honoring outstanding Americans who also maintain their national heritage. Ms. Strauss has found success as the vice president of the Federation of Jews from Central Europe since 1990, and is a former president of Congregation Habonim, New York City, where she garnered a laudable reputation between 1984 and 1992.
