Dr. Owen-Towle celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Growing up surrounded by art, Carolyn's father was well-known artist, Millard Sheets. After majoring in art and art history, she graduated, married and started a family.
Eventually she found her second home in her local Unitarian Universalist church. After a divorce and remarriage she did graduate work at the University of Iowa Graduate School of Religion, and in 1978 was ordained to the ministry. She and her husband, Rev. Dr. Tom Owen-Towle were called to First Unitarian Universalist Church in San Diego CA, where, as co ministers they served their congregation from 1978-2002.
During a significant time in history that included the AIDs crisis, Rev. Owen-Towle worked with the GLBTQ community. This was at a time when many people were unaccepting of gays and lesbians. Now the church is served by gay and lesbian ministers as well as a transgender President. During their tenure, the Owen¬-Towles also worked to end racism.
She served as President of the Ministerial Sisterhood for two years; then as the first woman President of the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee. Following that she became the first woman President of the Unitarian Universalist Ministers Assn. In 1993 Rev. Owen-Towle ran for the presidency of her denomination and narrowly lost to a male candidate.
As a clergywoman Rev. Dr. Owen-Towle was keenly involved with community organizations such as Planned Parenthood, a member of the San Diego Clergy Advisory Committee, the Interfaith AIDS Taskforce, the local Hospice of San Diego and, as an ally with African American clergy.
Once retired, Rev. Owen-Towle authored "Damngorgeous: A Daughter's Memoir of Millard Owen Sheets", published in 2008. A biography, this book features master watercolorist Sheets, and was published to coincide with an exhibition of his work at the Oceanside Museum of Art, in Oceanside, California. The book contains over 30 reproductions of his paintings.
In retirement Rev. Dr. Owen-Towle currently has served on the board of Mingei International Folk Art and Design Museum, Including two years as President. She has also served on the art boards of James Hubbell, artist and architect, and Sam Maloof, world famous MacArthur awardee woodworker.
In 2017, she was named Distinguished Alumna by Scripps College, and in 2019 she was honored with the Creative Sageing Award from the Unitarian Universalist Retired Ministers and Partners Association. A celebrated Marquis listee, she has been featured in more than 30 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Religion, Who's Who in the West, and Who's Who of American Women.
