ANN ARBOR, MI, October 09, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present William Kelly with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Kelly celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Kelly received his formal education at Columbia University in New York City where he received his A.B. degree in 1951, M.A. in 1953 and Ph.D in 1954 – all in geology. Immediately after completing his graduate studies there, he was drafted and spent the next two years on active duty in the U.S. Army.

Dr. Kelly's actual geology career began at the University of Michigan where he was hired as an Instructor in the fall of 1956. Unbeknownst at the time, he was destined to work at the U-M throughout the remainder of his career. He rose rapidly through the academic ranks, reaching Full Professorship in 1967.

Dr. Kelly served the University in several different capacities. As a teacher, he offered both undergraduate and graduate courses. At the graduate level, he served as a faculty research advisor for 37 MS degree and 27 PhD degree candidates many of whom went on to positions of leadership in industry, government or academia. As an administrator, Dr. Kelly served at various times as Chairman of the Department of Geological Sciences (1978-81), as Interim Director of the Institute of Science and Technology (1985-87) and as the University's Vice President for Research (1989-94). As a researcher, Dr. Kelly conducted innovative, integrated field and laboratory studies of ore deposits. Along with numerous other works, he completed major studies of the tin deposits of Bolivia, tungsten deposits in Portugal, gold telluride vein deposits in the Colorado Front Range and copper sulfide deposits in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. In the laboratory he collaborated with students and fellow faculty in using available thermodynamic data to calculate the stability relations of various ore-forming mineral assemblages at elevated temperatures. They also performed numerous experiments to determine the deformation properties of the common sulfide minerals at high temperatures. In many of his publications, Dr. Kelly demonstrated the value of hydrothermal fluid inclusions in determining compositions, temperature, and pressures at which their host mineral had originally formed.

Dr. Kelly was a member of several scientific societies, but his primary allegiance was to the Society of Economic Geologists (SEG), an international organization devoted to the study of and exploration ratio for economic mineral deposits. Dr. Kelly served SEG on many of its committees, as a Councilor, as an Associate Editor, as its Vice-President and ultimately as the SEG President in 1984. At their annual meeting in San Diego in 1991, SEG presented Dr. Kelly with its prestigious Penrose Gold Medal "in recognition of his unusually original work in the earth sciences". The University of Michigan presented Dr, Kelly with its own awards at various stages in his career: Award in 1981 and the President's Medallion in 1994.

Dr. Kelly retired from the University in 1994 and has spent the subsequent years fishing, painting and world travelling with Anna, his wife of over 62 years.
