Dr. John W. Wesner is the recipient of the Explorer Silver Award, the District Award of Merit, and the Silver Beaver Award by the Boy Scouts of the United States.

Having always enjoyed building things and seeing how they worked as a child, Dr. Wesner began his professional career as the senior engineer of the Westinghouse Atomic Power Division in Madison in 1964, remaining in this role for four years before joining the technical staff at Bell Telephone Laboratories in Holmdel, New Jersey, from 1968 to 1976. He then supervised at AT&T Bell Laboratories in Middletown, New Jersey, for two decades and Lucent Technologies in Holmdel for three years, and then joined the adjunct faculty in mechanical engineering at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) between 2000 and 2006. Following this, Dr. Wesner served the university as an adjunct faculty member of the Entertainment Technology Center from 2005 until 2015 and an adjunct fellow of the Institute of Complex Engineered Systems from 2007 to 2015.
In addition to this tenure, Dr. Wesner served on the advisory board of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at CMU. He also chaired the ad hoc advisory committee of the National Science Foundation Program in Engineering Design in Washington from 1987 to 1992. He is most proud of being able to serve an instrumental part in change. He was vital in the development of the telephone that read credit cards, which was an important part of the retail business and other companies. Dr. Wesner later developed four patents regarding that product.
Prior to the start of his professional career, Dr. Wesner pursued a formal education at CMU, earning a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering in 1958. He then matriculated at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), where he attained a Master of Mechanical Engineering the following year. Enlisted as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army Signal Corps from 1963 to 1964, Dr. Wesner returned to CMU to receive a Doctor of Philosophy in mechanical engineering in 1968. Additionally, he is a registered professional engineer in the states of Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
A prolific writer, Dr. Wesner authored one book, "Entertainment Engineering," and co-authored two more publications, "Winning With Quality," as well as the "Boy Scout Engineering Merit Badge Revised Pamphlet" in 2001. Moreover, he edited the "Addison Wesley Longman Engineering Process Improvement Series," served on the editorial board of the Bell Labs Technical Journal, and contributed articles to several professional journals. Outside of his primary trade, he served the American Society of Mechanical Engineers as the vice president of Programs and Activities from 2006 until 2009, the vice president of Systems and Design from 1996 to 1999, the Design Engineering Division chair between 1991 and 1992, the chair of the Design for Manufacturability Committee from 1987 to 1989, and the chair of the Design Education Committee from 1983 until 1987. Dr. Wesner also maintains involvement with Mensa, the Honorary Order of Kentucky Colonels, as well as the honor societies of Sigma Xi, Pi Tau Sigma, and Tau Beta Pi. He is a brother of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity.
A George Westinghouse scholar at CMU from 1954 to 1958, Dr. Wesner was a graduate fellow of the National Science Foundation from 1958 to 1960. He is an Eagle Scout and recipient of the Explorer Silver Award, the District Award of Merit, and the Silver Beaver Award by the Boy Scouts of the United States. Now in retirement, Dr. Wesner enjoys model railroading and war gaming in his spare time. He is married to his loving wife of 54 years, Monica Anneliese Fischer, with whom he has raised two wonderful children, Katrin and Francis William.
