Choosing law, he matriculated to West Virginia University, where he attained a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1971 after becoming a Koontz Scholar and winning two American Jurisprudence Book Awards. In 1969 he married the love of his life, Drusilla Newlon Green. Together, they raised two children, Wilburn Camrock Campbell and Matthew Patrick Campbell, along with numerous cats, dogs, gerbils, fish, and hot-blooded horses. Their marriage lasted 45 fiery-but-steadfast years, until she died in his arms of lung cancer in 2014. Since 1976, Mr. Campbell has been a law professor at the California Western School of Law in San Diego.
