With 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Anderson has been recognized as a distinguished professor emeritus of Illinois State University since 2008, having been a professor since 1976. Prior to obtaining this role, he was an associate professor with Central State University from 1973 to 1976, and an associate professor and an arboretum director at the University of Wisconsin between 1970 and 1973. Earlier in his career, Dr. Anderson was an assistant professor with Southern Illinois University from 1968 until 1970.
Dr. Anderson first pursued an education with La Crosse State College, where he graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in 1963. He then joined the University of Wisconsin, completing a Master of Science in 1965. Dr. Anderson continued his studies with the school earning a Doctor of Philosophy in 1968.
A respected voice in his areas of interest, Dr. Anderson has been affiliated with a number of professional organizations. A fellow of the Illinois Academy of Sciences, he is a member of the Ecological Society of America, the Society for Ecological Restoration, the American Botanical Society, and Kappa Delta Pi. Dr. Anderson was a member of the Board of Directors (2010-2012 and 2014-2016) and president (2012-2014) of the Great Lakes Midwest Chapter of the Society for Ecological Restoration. He was a State of Illinois Nature Preserves Commissioner (1985-1989) and a past president and lifetime honorary member of the ParkLands Foundation Board of Directors (1983-present).
Throughout his career, Dr. Anderson has been recognized for his contributions, including having been named a McMullen Lecturer by Monmouth College. He has been featured in numerous honors publications, including Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the World. Adjacent to his career, Dr. Anderson has been happily married to his wife, Mary Rebecca Blocher, for more than 50 years, and together they are the proud parents of two children, through whom they have four grandchildren.
