Mr. Chamby entered the optical industry in 1950. Following his father's footsteps who was himself an optician but died young from his wounds from WWI, he graduated after 4 years at the Superior School of Optometry, Paris. He subsequently worked as an optician for the multiple stores operation «Les Frères Lissac« in Paris, before becoming a marketing associate with the parent company Silor, an early team that was to become after merger with Essel, (SL) the company became known as Essilor International», today the world's largest optical lens manufacturer. He therefore started to travel on all continents, which he continued to do during his entire professional life.
In New York City, after his years as Technical Director for E.B. Meyrowitz high end stores, he developed Lugene, Inc. as the most prestigious opticians in America, became President then chairman of the Board of the new Optical Corporation of America with 55 stores through the USA , optical laboratories, wholesale division, contact lenses and hearing aids subsidiaries until 1988. At the same time, he was President of Dempsey and Carroll, the second oldest stationers engravers in the U.S.
Meanwhile Gilbert Chamby had become co-chairman of the Alliances Françaises in America, the worldwide cultural organization. He represented the North America Continent at its 100th anniversary, at the Sorbonne in Paris, for the celebration in 1983.
Mr. Chamby has continued to travel internationally, assisting in the creation of Minima, an optical distribution and manufacturing company based in France.
He pursued his interests in World History, particularly Art History and Geopolitics, those subjects facilitated by his constant global travels.
A former Service man of the French Army as well as with NATO, he was happily married for years to the late Benedicte Nielsen, a native of Denmark, with 3 children, Karen, Dan and Charlotte and 8 grandchildren and new great grandchildren.
Gilbert Chamby lives in West Palm Beach, Florida as well as in Paris, France. He was born in 1930.
