Now a professor emeritus in the department of physics and astronomy at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, Dr. Kalelkar taught on the New Brunswick, New Jersey, campus for 35 years before retiring in 2013. During his tenure, he served as a graduate program director from 1985 to 1989 and the program director from 1998 to 2013. He also served on countless committees, including the university senate for many years. A former panelist for the U.S. Department of Education's Minority Science and Engineering Improvement Project, Dr. Kalelkar previously taught physics and became a research associate at Columbia University between 1975 and 1978.
During his career, Dr. Kalelkar conducted experiments in elementary-particle physics, one of which was at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center where he made precision tests of the standard model by studying the interactions of high-energy polarized electrons with antielectrons. The apparatus, which is called a Stanford Large Detector (SLD), weighs 4,000 tons and is six stories tall. Hundreds of physicists from 33 institutions around the world collaborated on this experiment.
Born in India, Dr. Kalelkar relocated to the U.S. at the age of 12, where he subsequently graduated from Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School in Bethesda, Maryland in 1964. He later pursued higher education at the prestigious Harvard University where he worked on bubble chamber experiments and earned a bachelor's degree in 1968. Dr. Kalelkar concluded his studies at Columbia University, obtaining a master's degree in 1970 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1975.
A prolific writer, Dr. Kalelkar has contributed more than 100 articles to scientific journals, including Physical Review, Nuclear Physics and Zeitschrift fur Physik. He has been active as a reviewer for Physical Review and Physical Review Letters since 1976. A lifetime member of the American Contract Bridge League, the governing body for contract bridge in the United States, Mexico, Bermuda and Canada, Dr. Kalelkar is also a member of the American Physical Society and the American Association of Physics Teachers.
Upon his retirement in 2013, Dr. Kalelkar established the Mohan S. Kalelkar Award for Outstanding Academic Excellence by Women Physics Majors. Donating $50,000 to establish the monetary endowment award, it is given annually to one or more women physics majors attending Rutgers who, in the judgment of the physics faculty, have demonstrated outstanding academic excellence. The award winners are announced at the departmental awards banquet each April, which is sponsored by the Rutgers Society of Physics Students. There have been seven winners of this eponymous award so far.
In 2006, Dr. Kalelkar was presented with the Warren I. Susman Award for Excellence in Teaching, the highest teaching award available at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. He previously accepted the Faculty of Arts and Sciences Award for Distinguished Contributions to Undergraduate Education in 1994 and the Outstanding Teacher Award from the Rutgers Society of Physics Students in 1994. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Kalelkar has been featured in the fourth and ninth editions of Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
