Active at Princeton University for 35 years, Prof. Cooper has been designated as a Henry Putnam university professor emeritus since 2016. During his tenure at the aforementioned academic institution, he served as Stuart professor of philosophy and the chair of the department of philosophy. Previously holding teaching appointments at Harvard University and the University of Pittsburgh, Prof. Cooper worked as a visiting professor at Princeton University for one year before becoming a regular faculty member.
Having excelled in academia for 50 wonderful years, Prof. Cooper continues to serve on the board of The Archiv für Geschichte der Philosophie and as co-editor for ancient philosophy of the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosopohy. An expert in Greek philosophy and ancient philosophy generally, he authored several books, including "Reason and Human Good in Aristotle" (1975), "Reason and Emotion" (1999), "Knowledge, Nature, and the Good" (2004) and "Pursuits of Wisdom: Six Ways of Life in Ancient Philosophy from Socrates to Plotinus" (2012). He also edited "Seneca: Moral and Political Essays" (1995) and "Plato: Complete Works" (1997). Prof. Cooper contributed numerous articles to professional publications and served on the editorial boards of American Philosophy Quarterly, the History of Philosophy Quarterly, as well as the Archiv für Geschichte der Philosophie.
Born in Memphis, Tennessee, Prof. Cooper attended Phillips Exeter Academy, where he was first introduced to philosophy through studying Plato's Republic in his senior year. Once he graduated, he pursued his education at Harvard University, where he continued to study philosophy, as well as ancient Greek, obtaining both a bachelor's degree, magna cum laude, in 1961 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1967. He also graduated with a Bachelor of Philosophy from Corpus Christi College in Oxford, England, in 1963, as a Marshall Scholar. Elected fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2004), he is also an honorary fellow of Corpus Christi College, Oxford. Furthermore, Prof. Cooper is an honorary member of the American Philosophical Association where he held the posts of vice president and president of the Eastern Division and served on numerous Divisional committees, as well as vice-chair of the National Board of Officers.
Princeton University presented Prof. Cooper with a Howard T. Behrman Award for Distinguished Achievement in the Humanities in 2004 and a Graduate Mentoring Award from the McGraw Center for Teaching and Learning in 2003. He also accepted a Franklin Matchette Prize from the American Philosophical Association for Reason and Human Good in Aristotle in 1977. During his career, he has received several fellowships as well, from such organizations as the National Endowment of the Humanities, the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford, and the American Council of Learned Societies. A celebrated Marquis listee, Prof. Cooper has been featured in more than 30 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in the East.
