Previously, he worked for the Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital as a principal clinical psychologist for eight years. Dr. Malgieri also held psychologist appointments at Rahway State Prison in Rahway, New Jersey, and NYSARC in Geneva.

He originally planned to pursue a career in electronics, and as an expert in Morse code, he developed a fascination for wavelength. Attending a course in brain and behavior, Dr. Malgieri then discovered human personality and similar subjects associated with brain activity, which led to a shift in his professional direction.
Dr. Malgieri initially received a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from the State University of New York, in 1968. He then enrolled at Roosevelt University, where he served as a graduate assistant and acquired a Master of Arts in psychology in 1974. Years later, Dr. Malgieri graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy in clinical psychology at the New School for Social Research in 1991.
Upon earning his undergraduate degree, Dr. Malgieri served two years with the U.S. Army in Vietnam between 1969 and 1971. He is a certified hypnotherapist through the Wellness Institute in Seattle, is certified in biofeedback through the New Jersey Biofeedback Association and is a licensed psychologist through the New Jersey and New York State Boards of Psychological Examiners. Moreover, Dr. Malgieri is a licensed amateur radio operator through the Federal Communications Commission as well.
Furthermore, Dr. Malgieri is a member of the Central New York Psychological Association. He is also active with the American Psychological Association, from which he accepted the Medical Corps Psychologist Honor Award for service in Viet Nam in 2002.
