Dr. Zjawiony, a professor emeritus of pharmacognosy in the Department of Biomolecular Sciences at the University of Mississippi, enjoyed a very rewarding career in academia for many years. First working as a research assistant and senior research assistant at the Institute of Organic Chemistry in his home country at Technical University of Lodz in Poland, he later acquired an assistant professor position on campus in 1975, where he remained for 13 years. In 1988, Dr. Zjawiony traveled to the U.S. as a Fulbright scholar at the University of Mississippi, with which he contributed for two years on a research project in the field of new cardiovascular drugs. Becoming a faculty member in 1992 as an associate professor of pharmacognosy and research associate professor in the Research Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, he later advanced to the position of a full professor in 1999.
Throughout his career, Dr. Zjawiony's main research interest focused on the design and synthesis of new compounds of pharmaceutical interest based on natural products models derived from plants, fungi and marine organisms, isolation and identification of natural products and their semi-synthetic transformations with an emphasis on psychoactive natural products. He was the principal and co-principal investigator on 38 grants and contracts from government agencies and pharmaceutical companies in excess of $3 million in total. Dr. Zjawiony has collaborated with many scientists and institutions across the U.S. and abroad in such places as Poland, Brazil, Italy, Mexico and Egypt, among other countries. Further, he has flourished as a consultant for Eli, Inc., and as a consultant reviewer for the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.
As a result of Dr. Zjawiony's research, he has contributed six chapters to books as a co-author, over 130 articles to various peer-reviewed journals, and over 260 abstracts to national and international conferences. He has also participated in 47 invited lectures on the topics of organic, medicinal, natural products and pharmaceutical chemistry. Dr. Zjawiony notably holds 37 patents in the synthesis of drugs and natural products.
To prepare for his illustrious career, Dr. Zjawiony received a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry in 1965, a Master of Science in pharmacy in 1965 and a Doctor of Philosophy in organic chemistry in 1974 at Technical University of Lodz. Upon the completion of his doctorate, he traveled to the U.S. as a postdoctoral fellow, working in the area of beta-adrenergic antagonists at the National Institutes of Health. Active with several industry-related organizations throughout his career, Dr. Zjawiony remains a member of the American Chemical Society, the American Society of Pharmacognosy, the American Heart Association and the Phytochemical Society of Europe. He is also a member of the Polish Association of Centers for Technology Transfer where he was honored with an Outstanding Achievement Technology Award in 1977.
Recognized for his many achievements, Dr. Zjawiony was more recently honored with a 25-Year Service Award from the University of Mississippi in 2014. Other recognitions include a Cumberland Pharmaceuticals Inc. Faculty Research Award for 2011-2012 and a Best Achievement Research and Development Chemical Industry Award from the Polish Government's department of chemical industry in Warsaw in 1976. A celebrated Marquis listee, Mr. Zjawiony has been included in the fourth edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
