Most recently he has excelled as a professor at the University of Minnesota since 2001 and was the chief executive officer of Hennepin Healthcare from 2013 to 2019. Previously, he worked as the chief executive officer of the Medical College of Physicians at the Medical College of Wisconsin from 2009 to 2013, a consultant for McKinsey & Co. from 2006 to 2009, and both a professor and chair of the department of urological surgery at the University of Minnesota from 2000 to 2006. Earlier, Dr. Pryor completed a residency in urology through the University of Virginia and a fellowship through the American Foundation of Urological Disease.
Initially exposed to the field of medicine when he became a nursing assistant after high school, Dr. Pryor found himself drawn to the profession as a way to help people. He first earned a Bachelor of Arts from Carleton College in 1979, followed by a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Minnesota in 1983. Subsequently, he obtained a Master of Science from the University of Virginia and a Master of Business Administration from Northwestern University in Illinois in 1989 and 2006, respectively. He has also received certification as a diplomate of the American Board of Urology.
Dr. Pryor is a prolific writer. He has authored over 70 papers, co-edited the Handbook of Andrology and numerous other books, was co-editor-in-chief of the Journal of Andrology from 1997-2002, and authored "It's in the Male: Everyone's Guide to Men's Health." In order to remain aware of developments in his field, he is a member of the American Urological Association and has been the previous President of the American Society of Andrology.
For excellence in his career, Dr. Pryor has received a number of accolades through the years. Notably, he has been the recipient of a grant from the National Institute of Health from 1992-1997. Presented with the Carlton Distinguished Alumni Award in 2004, he was honored among the Top Ten Most Admired CEOs through the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal in 2018. Above all of his awards, Dr. Pryor considers the highlight of his career to be helping families who are struggling to have children. He receives many pictures during the holidays, and one of his patients even named their child after him.
Born in Hartford, Connecticut, to Richard and Elizabeth Pryor, Dr. Pryor has been happily married to his wife Laurie E. Stevens since 1979. Together they are the proud parents of three children, Emily, Thomas and Samuel, and grandparents to seven wonderful grandchildren (to date). In his free time, Dr. Pryor enjoys martial arts and cooking.
